Junior just starting search...

Here is me.

4.25 GPA-- by semester (roughly):
Freshman 4.27 & 4.19
Sophomore 4.08 & 4.27
Junior 4.42 & (likely-to-be) 4.35 to 4.50
[at the HS: A-/A/A+ is 93-100%
B-/B/B+ is 85-92%, etc.
straight A+'s without AP or honors is a 4.3 (sorry, not really used to saying weighted or unweighted)]

Fairly tough private school in Ohio (class is somewhere between 300 and 400, I think I'd be top 3-10% [%s not really given to students]). As a general idea, if the stats are correct, a total of 52 seniors applied to HYPS and 6 got in (not sure if that's good for one HS but whatever).
Asian-American, single-parent middle class fam. (definitely need aid)

Mostly honors classes
APUSH 5
APGov Test this May
(Senior year)
AP Spanish IV
AP English

SAT: 680CR 640M 760W (retake in June) -- 1320/1600 & 2080/2400
ACT: ? (awaiting April scores; retake in June)
^ I have no idea what to expect from the ACT scores (felt like everything went well except the science section), but I definitely can see a push to 700+ CR on my next SAT and maybe a little closer to 700 for Math (what an Asian I am). Assuming I use the SAT for admission, I'm guessing reaching a 1400 CR/M should be an important goal here?
No SAT IIs

EC (:/):
Piano 9 years (weekly lessons)
->Royal American Conservatory Exam Lv5, 8 passed
National Honor Society
Possible National Merit
Intramural Sports Gr10-12
Web Design Club Gr10
Pro-Life Club Gr11-12
Support US Troops Club Gr11-12
Community Service Gr10 (one semester, required by school/cirric; local center for assisting the poor)
Local Mentoring Program Gr11-12 (weekly 1hr; connected to my HS)
Liturgical Musicians Ensemble Gr11-12 (rehearsal twice a week; play at school masses)
Book Award from Northeastern U (top 10% and other qualities)
Will apply for job this spring/summer
(likely new senior activities--a few more service programs, yearbook, private basketball league, et al)

How accurate do these look (all preliminary and, I know, a weird grouping)? My ratings are based on what I know of each school's averages and also this online program that shows me the types of students from past classes/the 07 class that have been accepted from my HS to these schools:
U of Michigan - match
OSU (honors/scholars program) - match
U of Chicago - reach (maybe read: I hope a slight one??)
Northwestern - reach (ditto??)
Notre Dame - reach
Georgetown - big reach
Case Western Reserve U - match
Villanova - match
Loyola Chicago - safe
NYU - reasonable/slight reach
Kenyon College - match
UPitt - safe
Bucknell U - match
George Washington U - match
William & Mary - reach
Boston College - reasonable/slight reach
Xavier (OH, honors) - safe

Probably will pursue law. Not really a fan of math/science, more skilled in English/history. I wouldn't mind suggestions to good (size doesn't matter) or similar colleges not too far from CLE (BC is the greatest distance on that list and that's an unlikely choice for me anyways). Thanks.

Georgetown wouldn't be a "big reach" when UChic is a "reach." Your ECs, to most, would look good, but you've spread yourself really thin in the variance. As such, top schools would be more difficult, but the rest seem to be good. W&M would be a match for you.

Right now I'm pretty sure Mich/OSU/Case, perhaps Kenyon, are locks for getting an app from me. Along with that I will probably apply to 1-3 of those reaches, most likely one of the Illinois ones... my counselor at school has said UCHI and NU are "50/50 / Reasonable" and Notre Dame a "Stretch" (apparently a 700M 700CR is "magic" for them?).

Anyone think one is more likely than the others for me among UCHI-NU-Notre Dame-Georgetown? Our school (Jesuit) tends to send a lot to ND and Gtown (a lot get denied too though).

Here's my class schedule. Not as rigorous as what most post here but my HS is considered one of the strongest academically around the area.
History (World History - APUSH - APGovt - Econ [elective])
English (Eng. I - Eng. II - Eng. III - AP English Lang.)
Math (Hon. Alg I - Hon. Geometry - Hon. Alg II/Trig - Hon. Pre-Calc)
Science (///- Bio - Hon. Chem - Physics)
Foreign Language (Span. II - Hon. Span. III - Span. IV [should have taken AP but my teacher didn't rec. me :(] - AP Span. IV [not required])
Fine Arts (Oral Interpretation - Musical Arts)

I'm fearing that I'll have trouble getting a good financial deal with the tougher schools (e.g. Michigan--OOS). My mom makes <40K and my pre-med brother will still be a senior in college by my freshman year.

hey, Kenyon and not Oberlin :(. That is bad.

Holy Cross might be a good choice.

Have you given Pitt much thought? It's "pre-law majors" such as political science and history are pretty highly regarded. If you can bring up your SAT scores you would get some serious money.

Oberlin I've been rec'd before but I'm not sure it's my thing with the liberal reputation and being 30 mins from my house.

Holy Cross, like BC, appears good to me, but distance is an issue.

I have looked at and been rec'd Pitt but I haven't really gone through its (financial aid and other) info as much as others. My SAT/ACT were taken cold so I think I'll study a bit before the June ones.. hoping for a 1400CR/M (don't even know my Apr. ACT scores yet). Thanks.

bump. waiting to see ACT scores (without the darn fee)!

I took the April ACT's too... and the science section was the most difficult for sure!! I want my scores!!!

i think northwestern would be more of a match
..ust my 2cents

so I got my ACT April scores back today... first time, cold, just like my SAT
Eng 32
Math 30
Rdg 35
Sci 28 (:()
COMPOSITE 31

no writing section, made a mistake in not signing up, but I'm re-taking in June.

A little disappointed, though that pretty much converts to my SAT range... :/ Ah well, at least I dominated the AP Govt. test today..

You'd be in at Nova simply because you arent white.

As of now I think my top interests are in OSU, Northwestern, and Michigan. I'm hoping to get full tuition or something around there at OSU (Morrill scholarship possibly); as for NU I've heard good things about scholarships they give based purely on aid, so I think it's a matter of getting in there. Michigan I still really like for their programs but I'm fearing my OOS status. My family's not big on loans so I'd need to get a lot of grant-type aid whereever I go.
