Good colleges wants applicants to have unique activities or commitment to certain ones, but as a fairly immature 14 and 15 year old, I had not cared about EC's. Now I'm in my Junior year and I don't know what to do because this is the only year (bar the beginning of next year), to show colleges that I am not a slacker. In reality I was a slacker until this year though, and I'd do anything to redeem myself and get into somewhere such as Tulane or Vandy. Note: I don't want you to shoot me down here, as my academics are above average and I have not yet taken the SAT's.

At the same time I'm not going to sign up to teach kids in Africa or intern at Hopkins simply because that could "Boost" my resume. I am an average math and science student, and enjoy English and History for the most part. If anyone has ideas that would be great - right now I'm in Yearbook and Newspaper but I am looking for something unique that I can enjoy, and when I read the chance me threads, people have some insane things that I don't really understand how they juggle especially as 14 and 15 year old kids.

Tl;dr version: I matured and now idk what EC's to do to make me stand out

Thanks :)

Most people will probably respond that you should only do something that you really care about. Don’t just volunteer for something so you have an “EC”. This is probably true. However, if there is some volunteer thing you could do like working at a hospital that would help you think about future careers, that might be worth doing. Otherwise, maybe since you are already on the newspaper staff you should just pursue writing about a few issues you are interested in. That is, get more involved in something you are already doing.

I agree with Hitch. If you enjoy English and History, you could try writing some stories for submission to a literary journal, or research some aspect of history in your area that might make an interesting article to be published in your local paper. Something like that would show true interest in something.

Volunteer and join a few clubs at your school. Stick with it through senior year (or at least until you finish filling out applications). And you’ll probably be getting a job soon, no?

<.< I have a job and I already got a couple clubs but I want to go somewhere like Tulane that’s a reach now but maybe feasible after this year :
