Junior's chances at UF?

ACT: 28

I have a 3.97 unweighted I've gotten 3 B's, the rest are A's.

APs: Human Geography, Psychology, World History, English Lang.

Junior Year Schedule:
Health Science (Medical Academy class)
Spanish 3 Honors
US History Honors
Analysis of Functions Honors
Anatomy & Physiology Honors
AP Lang
Exploratory Teaching (goes on transcript as research I think)

ECs: JV Basketball (2 years) Hispanic honor society (3 years) NHS (1 year) best buddies (2 years) Medical Academy (1 year) Treasurer of my church youth ministry

Community service: Summer basketball camp, give kids the world, local hospital

I don't know if this makes a difference but I'm African.

My major worries are that my junior schedule and EC's are kind of weak but i plan to take 3 APs next year and 3 honors

Oh and my class rank is 26/800

I think you’re on track, but you’ll learn that many people find UF to be arbitrary because they are very holistic. In terms of statistics though I think you’re good right now, maybe attempt a retake on the ACT just to see if you can score higher.

Yeah, SAT is low especially with a 3.97. Try for a 30. GL

Soso, you might want to reread that…

The ACT is a bit low. Otherwise you’re good. What exactly is Analysis of Functions, some type of math class?

@AeroMike
Yeah it’s like a step down from pre-Calc. It’s goes more in depth into Algebra 2 and then it goes into trigonometry

Well you can’t do anything about this now, but your course rigor for your junior year isn’t the strongest. Study extra hard on your standardized tests to make yourself a strong applicant.

@OP So the highest math you’ll grttin is Pre Calc?

@Niquii77 yeah, im taking pre-Calc next year. Analysis of functions is usually a senior class.

I would think you would get in. I got in with a lower ACT score and a 3.84 GPA and no AP classes, haha. I take dual enrollment.

You should get in. 3.97 unweighted is way more weighted, assuming some of those classes were honors if they weren’t AP. The middle 50% of this year’s fall class was between 4.0-4.4 [University of Florida - Admissions](Freshman - How To Apply - University of Florida) We recently went to the tour, where they told applicants that they would be unlikely to get in with only 4 APs. However, if you take 3 next year, that will be 7. You might want to retake the ACT or try the SAT, since you still have plenty of time. They superscore the tests. Also, I know they don’t hold a lower score against you because we accidentally sent by daughter’s first score, which was not in range to get in, along with her second score, which was, and she still got in.

Is one of the APs you’re taking a 4th year of Spanish? I think that looks impressive if so.

All that said, UF admissions are a crapshoot. Leadership seems to be key. Maybe try to be president of that youth group.

@proudparent2 I’m thinking of taking Spanish 4 Honors, the APs im planning on are AP Lit AP Enviro and AP Econ/AP Gov. UF superscores ACT?

Actually, no. Sorry. It looks like they only superscore the SAT. [University of Florida - Admissions](Freshman - How To Apply - University of Florida) Weird. Wonder why. Still might want to take the SAT. Sometimes people do way better on one than the other.

I’m definitely gonna try the SAT but I’m not sure if I should take the ACT again because I already took it twice and got a 28 both times

Yeah, I wouldn’t retake the ACT. That’s your score. We know someone who spent a fortune on test prep only to gain 10 points on the SAT. But, meanwhile, we do know someone who totally bombed the SAT only to do way better on the ACT. They’re very different tests. The SAT is more of a test on how to game a test, while the ACT is more of a test of acquired and retained knowledge. People who “test well” tend to do better on the SAT.

^Like the ACT is a test of crystallized knowledge and the SAT a test of fluid knowledge? That’d make sense, because I’m good at putting together the pieces of a question and forming an answer without really knowing much about it, so I did pretty good on the SAT. Perhaps OP is good at puzzles too?

I kind of am, on tests if I don’t know the answer I can often use clues or whatever to come up with the best choice. The science section on the ACT is what brought down my composite though.

I know how you feel about science. :frowning: it brought my score down. It could’ve been so much more!

Anywho…give SAT a try. Don’t retake ACT. I took it three times. Got the same score two times and the third time scored one point higher.

One of my friends took the ACT three times and got the same score each time. I’m thinking about taking the SAT early senior year so I have the summer to prepare for it.

Well I think you’re good. Just try to stay focused from now to your Senior year. I think it is much important that you have good responses in your application. Make sure you have a good essay that allows the admissions people to have a better idea of WHO YOU REALLY ARE and do good on the resume part.

You could also try applying to the Summer Term so that you could have a better chance of getting in. I had a 3.97 unweighted GPA but an ACT score of 26 and I got accepted. So I think that my Essay got me in. (Also, I’m not sure but the school that I goes to allows me to get an A.A degree and diploma- so maybe that was how I got in?)

I took it in June using the same logic. I really thought it would be harder than it was. You should brush up on the older stuff that you may not have done recently, like geometry. There were a few concepts on the SAT I had not really focused on since middle school.
