Just Called UCLA / Need some ideas to appeal...

So I just called UCLA a minute ago about my rejection as a business econ major, here's what happened:

Before I tell my story, here's my stat:

Major: Business Econ
GPA: 3.94
Pre-req&IGETC: all done
EC: Math tutor, community volunteer
p.s: Just received my green card last month, applied as "Non-Immigrant"

Basically, I asked her the reason why I was rejected, after she checked out my application, she told me that I was "really" close to being admitted and should try to appeal

Also, I've seen someone in the forum who was labeled as an international student by mistake and was able to appeal and eventually got into UCLA

So I went ahead and asked her if that's one of the reasons I was rejected

Unfortunately, since I just received my permanent residency last month, she told me that I'm also labeled as an international student due to the fact that I applied as "Non-Immigrant"

However, she told me that I could appeal and specify that I'm not an international student and probably would have a chance of getting in

But she also told me that I could consider all other educational options since the response is not guaranteed by June 1

Now I'm trying to write up a 2-page essay to appeal, it would be nice if you guys can provide me some ideas on how to present some new and compelling information!

(I'm thinking about focusing on explaining my residency and how hard I worked to get into UCLA... )

Good luck to you guys trying to appeal!

If your international status was your biggest barrier to being admitted (which I’m sure it was), then I think that’s really the only compelling info that you need to give them. Don’t overwhelm them with unnecessary info would be my advice. Good luck.

I think you have a very good chance of appealing the decision because of your high gpa and since you were almost admitted. Just provide documents that you are a permanent resident now. Anyways, I also called and asked why I was rejected and they said because I didn’t mention that I took chemistry in high school, which was part of the prereq for psychology major. She also told me that I should try to appeal. I don’t know if I should even bother. Every transfer students that got rejected from UCLA should call and ask for the reason why, maybe people will have a chance to appeal. Just thought maybe I should share that with everyone =)

Good luck. Seems like you have a great case and you really deserve to go!

I called and they said that because I was short one pre-req (was not offered by my CC), I was not a competitive enough applicant for my major (comm). I was told by my cc counselor that UC doesn’t count it against you if the course isn’t offered at your cc. I guess that wasn’t the case for me. :(

The weird thing was that I asked her if my international status was my biggest barrier to being admitted since offers for international students are limited, she sounded unsured and didn’t really want to give me answers on whether applied as an international student is an disadvantage or not…

She kept saying that business econ is an highly impacted major though…

I know it sucks to hear that all these international students with 4.0 GPA’s got rejected, now I understand the feeling… :(

Well, in all honesty you’re not the only qualified applicant to be rejected for biz econ. There was one thread earlier I saw where several people with 3.9+ were rejected with everything completed, and I don’t even think they were internationals.

But if they did mark you as an international, it’s definitely worth appealing.

sooo… why doesn’t ucla answer my PHONE!!

They are available Monday to Friday from 1-4 pm…

how the hell do they make these kind of mistakes? is it the applicant’s or the college’s fault? i mean for people who don’t use collegeconfidential, how do they know if they weren’t screwed over?

“how the hell do they make these kind of mistakes? is it the applicant’s or the college’s fault? i mean for people who don’t use collegeconfidential, how do they know if they weren’t screwed over?”

This will be true of any large institution/company. Not unique to UCLA by a long shot

ive been trying to call them for 2 weeks now, and no one ever answers the phone. then the cell phone automatically cutts the line! what do i do =(

Maybe if you live somewhat close enough just come straight to the office in person?

“This will be true of any large institution/company. Not unique to UCLA by a long shot”

I’m just saying it is unfortunate it happens at any university. I mean this why people get riled up and file cases like UC vs Bakke

I mean this is an error that shouldn’t be let go at any UC, State, or college period

and I wasn’t targeting any college personally, i was saying that it is messed for a student to have great stats and then some wise person in admissions says “hey look at the name, looks foreign, so must be an international student”

i live in sf… can i email them?/
