Just curious about something

Before I begin, let me say that I'm already a college freshman and don't have to worry about this situation. But browsing through the forums got me thinking about this question: Since ED is binding and you HAVE to go to that school, what would happen if you were accepted but then slacked off and had your admission revoked? Would their act of revoking the admission cancel out the ED and therefore allow you to apply elsewhere? Of course they usually don't revoke until after spring semester (unless you REALLY screw up), so it would be too late for most quality schools.

Just wondering.

I think in that case you'd be able to apply elsewhere. But they don't revoke until, like, June, so I think you'd have to take a year off and apply again. But then you'd be stuck with that horrible transcript from when you screwed up...

Theoretically, it would work. But I don't think it's practical.

Why would anyone want to go back on his/her word, anyway? This is a binding contract, and the college can take legal action, if they want to. Except for financial reasons, I don't think people usually back out [and that's allowed]. And anyway, an ED school is most of the time, a dream school! And wouldn't you be excited to get in?!!

Maybe sometimes you apply ED to a school just to be done early, or to just get in somewhere. I know a lot of very good students who got in early at schools like Brown, or Dartmouth, and were extremely happy...right until everyone else with poorer stats started getting RD into princeton, mit, etc.

Hmm.. never thought about that. You would be kind of screwed, I'd think, since you haven't applied to any other schools. I guess you'd have to apply to schools with rolling admission (some have deadlines as last as June, I hear) or apply for January start, take a year off, etc. That would be an awfully sad situation.

i don't think they'd reject you unless you pretty much flunk your classses

Why would they allow an ED student to get a few Ds or Fs but revoke admission for a RD acceptance with same decline though? Just because the student applied ED shouldn't give them any advantage other than knowing where they're going by December.

"the college can take legal action"

To force a student to attend who doesn't want to? To pay damages? Surely you're joking, Mr. Jrockman.
