So I filed my FAFSA on 1/1/12 and indicated that both my D and us(parents) "will file"

D has filed long ago and received her refund
We have not filed our return yet as we are waiting on a 1099B form.

So, the point of the story is that I have not updated FAFSA to say we filed and the financial aid deadline is 3/1/12. We will not have filed by then.

This is fine, right? As long as I originally completed it, I can update it in April and change to "have filed"?

I'm planning to wait until a few weeks after we file and then update and use the retrieval tool as our SAR indicated we were chosen for verification although I have not heard anything from the school. This will be long past any deadlines.

You know, honestly, now that I think about it, there’s really no point in calling. Because either it’s “all good” or it’s not. There’s nothing I can do differently. I am unable to file before the deadline of 3/1/12. So I guess I’ll just let it go and hope for the best. The SAR indicated that we were pell grant eligible this year(we weren’t last year) and I just really don’t want to miss that opportunity.

In most cases, your submission on Jan 1 would meet the “deadline” for submission to the school…but you should call THIS school and ask.

Re: waiting for a 1099…one of my kids is a 1099 worker. He keeps track of ALL earnings from 1099 work himself. The 1099 form itself is not necessary to complete your taxes IF you have the records of the earnings…I’m not a tax expert but that is what my kid tells me…and what his accountant told him.

I have a similar issue with D1 (going to be a senior). I have completed the FAFSA and linked my tax return but will not be able to link D2’s tax return by the deadline since she filed a paper return (there are reasons for that) and her return won’t be available for linking until after the deadline. Her college REQUIRES the linking this year. I emailed the FA office and asked if they would like the FAFSA filed with only my return linked and updated ASAP after the deadline with D1’s return linked. They also require CSS and IDOC which I can do by the deadline.

It may be worth an email so as to indicate that you have an extenuating circumstance (awaiting the 1099B).

Our 1099 Div was available online 2/15, but they said that they would be mailed 2/29. I was just about to take the taxes to the accountant and have her at least start them (then just plug that number in later), but then it appeared on-line, so all was good.
I guess it is most likely possible to keep track of that on your own, although they list "ordinary "dividends and “qualified” dividends…so I am not sure how that works. Then if you have had a sale of a stock or mutual fund, it further complicates things…
I chose to wait for the form! Is it possible yours is also on-line, or maybe if you call customer service they could read it to you (I have done that before).

If you are Pell eligible, you WILL get the Pell grant even if you miss that March 1 deadline. BUT more important would be to find out if missing that deadline would affect any institutional aid you are receiving from the college. The Pell is $5400 or so…your institutional aid could be far higher.

It said Pell could potentially be $4,600? This is new for us as our situation changed significantly from last year.

I don’t think there will be any institutional aid. It’s a state school and we didn’t get any last year. Just stafford loans

I wasn’t sure how to report the dividends either so I thought waiting for the form was best. It’s not like these will be huge numbers or anything but I want them to be accurate! We expected it by 2/15 but then got a mailer from Raymond James that it would not be available until 3/15. As far as online, I’ve been checking the website every single day in hopes that it will appear early. So far, no luck!
