Who else saw Travolta's decimation of Idina Menzel's name last night? How do you mess that up? She was so nervous but pulled off a beautiful performance despite the name mixup!

And if you missed it, here’s a hilarious buzzfeed thread with a clip of it, plus suggestions for how John Travolta might pronounce other actors’ names…

If John Travolta Had To Pronounce Everyone's Name At The Oscars;

My favorite of the Adele Dazim fake twitter accounts was this post: “Travolta never bothered me anyway!”

Love it!!

LOL. I had no clue who that even was until it was over. “The wickedly talented, whatever.” LOL.

I hope she got a HUGE bouquet of long stem roses signed JT this morning, as a beginning to his LONG begging forgiveness process. Sheesh.

Honestly, I have no clue how that even happens. Your only little job is to introduce someone and you don’t know there name? And, you have been in show business for what 40 years? There were clearly teleprompter issues all night, but still. He cannot ad lib and fix a flub? Inexplicable.

We absolutely LOVE Idina Menzel and were very concerned that she seemed so nervous during her performance last night. Do you think it threw her off that JT butchered her name, or is performing at the Oscars just THAT scary?

More embarrassing for him than for her. Even with a teleprompter issue, wouldn’t you think that the presenters would confirm pronunciation prior to going onstage? He clearly didn’t know who she was, which isn’t all that surprising but man, I imagine he’s kicking himself today.

And yes, she seemed very nervous. I’ve seen her perform several times other than in shows, and she always comes across as nervous.

She is a very nervous performer…from what I understand I don’t think she was able to hear his introduction so I don’t think she heard the mistake.

She was really nervous, and she cracked a bit at the end which I thought was a WONDERFUL lesson for my MT
kid – even the best crack sometimes!!

This brings up two things that I find interesting.

1) For some reason often the most thrilling performances involve someone seeming slightly nervous. For example, we found the early American Idol seasons, where younger performers were involved (and where you often feared someone might totally lose it on stage), far more engaging than the later season with older, slicker competitors. To be clear, I find a huge difference between a performer seeming a little nervous and performers who are self conscious. Nervousness can be engaging, while watching someone watch themselves isn’t.

2) There is a particular type of “safe/consistent” MT vocal performance that I find far less thrilling than a performer like Idina Menzel or Alice Ripley, who can quickly move from making you think they can’t hit notes to belting their brains out. Something about their style seems to get a visceral reaction out of many people that “safe/consistent” voices don’t. Or is it just me?

That said, I don’t think last night was Adele Dazim’s finest moment, and I agree that it’s good for our kids to see that everyone gets nervous sometimes. ;)

@momcares, It’s not just you. I agree with all you wrote. That said I saw Idina Menzel when she was on her concert tour two years ago and she came to our city (and luck of the draw, my daughter got to go up on stage and sing “Take Me or Leave Me” with her.) She didn’t look nervous to me. She was lovely from beginning to end and seemed so appreciative of the adoring audience that was there to see her. Perhaps she knew she was 100 percent among her people and that relaxed her.

Adele Dazim, OMG. The whole Oscar show was underwhelming. But I thought Pink was surprisingly good as was Bette Midler. Everything else, not so much.

Well I want Ellen to decide she should be BFFs with me. She makes it look so easy and I think she would actually put her plate in the dishwasher instead of just bringing it to the sink. Or she fakes it well but in either case, I loved her as a host to an otherwise really long show. :-)

I’ve seen Idina several times, both in performance and in concert, and she does mention that she has terrible stage fright. I’m sure that kicked in when she walked out there and hearing her name mangled didn’t help. So glad that Ellen made a point of saying it correctly afterwards.

Just for fun… David Letterman… <a href=“Liza Menzelli? Idrizzle Menzezzle?
Can we also mention the scary faces….Kim Novak, Goldie Hawn, Liza….give me Dame Judi Dench any day!!

and John Travolta! He looked prety scary to me! LOL

Travolta’s hair was just silly.
