Just Going Crazy Waiting

Oberlin is DD's #1 choice but finances meant applying widely. She was a Questbridge finalist but did not match. When will the regular decision students find out about their admissions decisions? She's gotten some really generous aid at other schools and would like to decide and be done with it.

Sorry to say this, but Oberlin was the last one to come in for both of my relatives who applied to Oberlin last year – by a few days. Around April 1, I think.

Check out this thread to re-live the angst and hand-wringing of 2011:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/oberlin-college/1099897-waiting-game-____.html

You can get an idea of what the timing was like…although I don’t believe it’s a firm date they stick to. If they’ve got the class set earlier, I believe the letters will go out earlier.

There are three things worth calling out:

1) I believe Oberlin has a multicultural visit program for admitted students in early April. In order to give those people time to plan, they may receive their decisions a little earlier. There’s more about that in the link, above.

2) Oberlin gives out both merit and need-based aid and, according to some of the college guides I recall reading, merit aid flows most generously (but not exclusively) to lower-income students and students who add to the diverse mix of students on campus (who, of course, demonstrate merit). I don’t know much at all about Questbridge except for drive-by encounters with it on College Confidential…however, I suspect that, your daughter, being a Questbridge finalist, could be in the running for a combined need-based aid and merit-based aid package that may not be the same as a match – but still very generous overall and competitive with those other awards she’s sitting on.

3) I had two relatives admitted to Oberlin last year. Although it was the last college to send decisions to them, they both thought (at the time) that it was worth the wait and, of course, now the waiting part is a faded, distant memory. Although you may think differently at this point in the process, there is no – I repeat NO – long-term scarring or post-traumatic stress related to waiting a little longer. :)

Congratulations on the other decisions she has in hand, but most importantly, good luck with Oberlin’s.

The only promise we make about our decision letters is that applicants should have them in-hand by April 1st. If all goes well, they’ll be in the mail by March 23rd, but they might not go out until the following week.

Any new information on when decision letters are going out?

I got an email from admissions yesterday stating that I was admitted. I am an international so that is probably why they are notifying me beforehand (I live in turkey and snail mail takes a loooong time). The mail also says that a formal letter of admission will be mailed on the 23 rd. Good luck everyone!!!

Hey, Congrats EmirMur on your acceptance… I too am an international Student but have not received any email… So I’m thinking that I might be rejected (or hopefully, they’ve only emailed half the international students or something).

I also found this on the Oberlin Hopefuls Facebook Page: ‘The letters haven’t been sent yet. An admissions person will hop onto this page and let us know when the letters head out. Until then, all we can do is anxiously wait. ~ Ma’ayan’

Good Luck guys :)

I am an international too and have not been notified yet… Does that mean a rejection?? :(

I hope not. I am also international - from the Czech Republic - and received nothing so far. But that post made me check my email every 5 minutes. :)

Guys, so much luck!!! I hope we will soon be posting some positive messages.

Good news - we (int’ls) probably shouldn’t be worried, yet - Oberlin notifies all the international applicants via e-mail, regardless of the decision. So even if we were rejected we’d get an e-mail. No e-mail means nothing for now.

I’m so nervous to hear! Oberlin is my top choice, and I am also “just going crazy waiting”!

That’s good to hear. Btw, do you know when exactly will we get the email notifications?

@internationallie: I have no idea when… But I’m guessing it could be throughout next week as EmirMur has already got one.

A few international decision emails have gone out early, but most will go out starting this Friday, which is the same time we intend to mail our paper decision letters to all applicants.

Thank you very much. I was freaked out when I read EmirMur’s post!

The decisions are being e-mailed today, right? I am ‘Just Going Crazy Waiting’!!

Does anyone have an update on whether decisions are being mailed today? And does anyone know when the conservatory will mail theirs? And what if you applied to the double degree program? Is there one letter, or two? COMPLETELY LOSING IT.

From Oberlin Hopefuls Facebook:

Oberlin Hopefuls ‎deep breath “Tomorrowwwww, tomorrow, I’ll love ya, tomorrow, that’s only a day a wayyyyy.”

Right. Tomorrow. Albus the Squirrel and I will do our civic duty and investigate in the admissions office and return on Friday with a full report.

This was posted yesterday¡¡¡¡

Woo!! Just got my acceptance this morning! Such a relief:)
But good luck to everyone still waiting!

So in just a few hours!

CesVas, how did it arrive? Are you in the US?
