CTOPS is exhausting. They cram so much into the time.....the students are like deer in headlights and the parents exhausted. They ask for feed back and I don't know where to begin... Take comfy shoes parents.....get a good bed to sleep in at night.....and hold on tight. I came away loving carolina but tired. My D had a good time. Oh yeah, the campus is under major construction this summer as they try to finish up projects before the fall.

how did your D do on registration? we had heard all the horror stories here but my D got every class she wanted.

The campus is under major construction EVERY SUMMER ! :-)

What part of the ATL area are you from? My D is a rising senior from East Cobb.

Yeah, the construction this summer is nothing to last summer. The only major thing going on on N. Campus is that pipe work on Raleigh St. and the restoration of a few old buildings, and the only thing I can think of on S. Campus is Morrison.

Well, right after spring break that fence went up around Craige, that's probably not finished. And I hear the construction has begun on Carmichael already so that probably looks a mess. It just so happens that the four years I am there ('05-'09) are the surge years for construction. Go figure.

does anyone know if students are able to walk through Stadium Drive during the Carmichael construction? I hope so...I always liked to walk that way in the morning :)

You are right Summer is ALWAYS under construction.....do they ever finish any projects is what I kept wondering.

Class Registration : Lower your expectations. If you expected personal advising, your child won't get it. If you expected a lot of guidance--your child won't get it. So set yourself to be satisfied if your student walks away with a schedule. Tell them to go with a plan a, plan b....plan z. Tell them to use Drop add to get what they want. Prepare them to expect many classes to be full....and to use drop add to get what they want.

BROWNIEUNC: We are from Peachtree Corners area near Norcross. Glad to know another os parent

Yeah I'm at summer school right now and its funny to walk around and here the ctoppers complain about their scheudle. They all really don't realize that that schedule isn't set in stone and you can change it around completely in the first few days that you get here. Oh well, they'll figure it all out eventually.

hmm brownie...same one from IC? ;)

I just got back from CTOPS today, and it was really really fun! I love UNC even more now. I got pretty much all the classes I wanted except 1 (but its just History so it should be available in August at Drop/Add).

The laptops are cool, if anyone has questions about them, I'll be happy to answer them. (I got the CCI grant, so the cheapest laptop, but its still really really good).

some tips:

The dorms are cold! Bring a blanket.

Placement exams suck, they happen about 1.5 hours after you check in on
the first day. I tried to fail my exam on purpose to get a lower placement, but I still somehow managed to get into 105 and not 101 lol but whatever

The Orientation leaders are really funny and they know their stuff (they even helped me w/ my schedule). People are really friendly, so if you are shy and are worried about not having any friends, it's okay. Everybody is chill...I don't think I met one person there that was an ashole. but yea

um...the whole thing ended around 4:30 on the second day for me, but I know some people ended earlier (and a small amount ended after 4:30). Tell your parents to come around 4:30...if they are late, u can hang out at student union and stuff...everything is pretty much open.

Its not really tiring....its just a lot of stuff. But its cool...in fact I actually wish it was longer because it was really fun.

but don't worry about classes, most people were somewhat happy with their schedule.

Have fun and see ya in the fall! Good Luck! :)

We also just attended CTOPS and it is exhausting. We were very impressed with Carolina. The two people that stood out to me were Melissa Exum-Dean of Students (seems like a great lady and funny) and Fred Clark-Associate Dean of Academic Services (very outgoing and friendly). I was impressed by everyone, but these two people were great. My daughter was only able to get one class she wanted, but you have to bend a little in college. One of the orientation leaders suggested she try a class she would have never thought of trying. I believe you need to try some different classes while you are in college, because you never know it may be something you love. She was in group 12, so she did not get a first year seminar. We checked the directory of classes on her laptop before she went into to register. I would suggest to write down plenty of classes you are interested in - maybe 12 classes that you would consider taking.

Isn't Dean Exum wonderful!! We were so impressed with her last year at our Parent Orientation too!

It is very likely all scheduling problems will be resolved during add/drop. But, as I've mentioned before, also keep in mind UNC students are allowed to take one online course per semester as well. Seems as though there are a lot of history, art and other new curriculum courses offered there. My d is really enjoying her online UNC Art History class that she is taking while here in Houston. Flexible format, good online forums for class discussion, access to Houston Museum District and she gets her Visual/Performance curriculum requirement out of the way. Something to think about if things don't work out in add/drop.

lol I don't know if its the parents only, but I wasn't tired at all...I was just sleepy becuase of my sleeping patterns...not because the thing was tiring...

I guess it depends on what classes you need also.
