I am a sophomore. My GPA is 3.8 unweighted/4.2 weighted. I just received my PSAT..I started crying, seriously.

M 29 W 49 CR 49

I know I'm better than that..I was freaking out on test day, and I was sick, so maybe that's why I got those scores......

I'm not stupid. I am actually a great writer, I was just having a REALLY bad day. Regarding math, yeah, I am terrible at it, but not as bad as the PSAT makes me look.

Can I get my scores up to
M 60 CR 75 W 76 by next year/senior year? I bought so many PSAT/SAT prep books and I'll study out of them like crazy.

I want to go to UMass, UPenn, Cornell, University of New Hampshire, UConn, URI, one of the SUNYs, CUNY, etc.

an ~800 point jump in about one year does not look very reasonable. Obviously a few hundred points, but even that requires a lot of prep. Given your trajectory, U Penn and Cornell may not be in range, but you can work your SATs up into the range for other schools.

OM Gosh Nomad, take a deep breath. Perhaps you were off on your “bubbling”, I would think you would recall how you felt about the test after you were done in October.
PSAT has that P in front of it for a reason, it is a practice. Study. Set up a schedule for yourself and study- there are many different ways to do it. Determine when you will take your SAT to leave room for more then one taking if necessary. Some people don’t do standardized tests well, you can’t tell yet…so don’t psyche yourself out! Keep working in all areas, your ECs, your areas of strength and where you have to dig in and work harder.

The dream is alive, don’t let anyone tell you differently.

that’s a pretty huge jump that you want but depending on how off your game you actually were, it might be doable. regardless you will be able to raise your score quite a bit with practice. don’t stress too much about what this score means since you have 2 more years to prepare for testing (and since a sophomore psat score means absolutely nothing), but start going through a prep book and consider taking a class or getting a tutor to improve your scores. that said, remember that sat scores are only part of your application, so spend some time on them since it seems like it might be a weak spot, but try to keep your focus on what you’re great at so that college adcoms can look past your scores (if they end up being lower than average) and still see what a great candidate you are :)

You appear to have a decent GPA so there is either completely ridiculous grade inflation at your school, or you were just having a terrible day and did not prepare at all and scored at lot lower than you should have. If it’s the latter, don’t worry too much. Just spend some time preparing and you should easily get a decent score. You’re definitely not completely screwed.

This is EXACTLY ME’ right here! I have straight A’s and got 123 on my PSAT! Like seriously?! I omitted 17 questions though. The writing part I didn’t answer like 13 questions!

I was worried too! I got a 49 on math but 71 and 68 in the writing and reading section. I did not study at all!! My school told me it was irrelevant, but now I am worried that UChicago will ask for it for the summer program.
