Please be honest..................

I am South Asian(Indian), I live in Houston, Texas

This is my list....
RICE UNIVERSITY (E.D.-----GOT FLAT OUT REJECTED)
1. Brown
2. UPenn
3. Columbia(My dad used to work here, when we lived in the northeast)
4. Duke
5. Cornell
6. Northwestern
7. Washington University St.Louis
8. Vanderbilt
9. Emory
10. Texas A&M---Saftey, gauranteed a spot there

Unfortunately lately prestigious schools have been focusing more on rankings and GPA rather than just standardized testing and extracurriculars. I think you might have a good chance at Emory, University of Texas, and Texas A&M. But with the other schools, you never know.

I know, can somone chance me in a (accepted/rejected) format.....

I am suprised that I got flat out rejected because so many kids got into Rice with lower and much weaker stats then mine, because the were OOS, Rice really wants geographic diversity.......

My counselor did mention that my school is very competitive, she said that at surrounding schools in the area, I would have had a much higher class rank, possibly top 10 percent.....(Don't know how much this will help, apparantly for Rice it didn't help at all)

ftx2009, i really feel ya, im from houston too and I got flat out rejected. Houston kids that get into Rice have ridiculously high stats compared to OOS.
RICE UNIVERSITY (E.D.-----GOT FLAT OUT REJECTED)
1. Brown-reach
2. UPenn-high reach
3. Columbia(My dad used to work here, when we lived in the northeast)-low reach
4. Duke-low reach
5. Cornell-reach
6. Northwestern-reach
7. Washington University St.Louis-high reach
8. Vanderbilt-low reach
9. Emory-low reach
10. Texas A&M---Saftey, gauranteed a spot there

Honestly though, I think you will get into at least one of your reaches. Best of luck to you!

My predictions (Don't take them personally!)

Brown - rejected

UPenn - rejected

I'm not trying to be harsh, but your class rank is really not good for these colleges & you're an ORM. Your ECs are quite impressive though.

Sorry man, but top schools don't seem to care about SAT scores this year. GPA/Rank will kill you. Essays and ECs seem to be the determining factors this year, so they are your only hope. Work hard on them!

Brown - high reach
UPenn - high reach
Columbia - high reach
Duke - reach
Cornell - reach
Northwestern - low reach
Washington U - high reach
Vanderbilt - low reach
Emory - high match
Texas A&M - in

Class rank will destroy you. EC's are weak. Volunteering is good, but make sure you DON'T give them exact hours. Those make you seem like you're resume-packing. SAT is mediocre. Your ethnicity will be a problem too.

Don't worry, I'm almost in the exact same boat. Asian + decent GPA, but horrible rank (cause stupid non-AP students get higher rankings) + volunteering + mediocre SAT + decent EC's + why did I put down "undecided" for my major? = Flat out cornell ED rejection.

They all seem like far reaches in my opinion. You need to come up with a few more safety school or you will most definately be at Texas A&M. Your test scores are pretty and you should really consider: NYU, Northesatern, Kenyon College,(Buckell and Reed may give you the benefit of the doubt), if you're interested in business, consider Babson.

ouch if you didn't get into rice your chances at the ivies are pretty slim, even with your dad's connection to columbia. all of the other schools you should be fine though..
however, if you write really unique essays than you might have a chance at the ivies.

Rice is just desperate for geographic diversity, they took a kid with a 1300/1600 sat score, but rejected me with a 1470/1600, they didn't even defer me, wow.............
