I am a junior level transfer student in Revelle majoring in Microbiology.

I intend to finish I IGETC over the summer, but even if I do that I would be required to take FOUR quarters of language as well as 3 area of focus courses before I am able to finish the GE requirements for Revelle.

On top of that I need to start OCHEM at UCSD so I am already behind in my major upper division requirements.

How convincing is that to change to a different college like Warren or Sixth?
I know they accept IGETC (though sixth will need some upper division GEs)

surely you must know SOME language from your high school courses. even a measly 3 on an AP test gets you out of 3/4 of the language requirement. you're not that far behind -- chem 140b is required for metabolic biochem; most of the upper division bio electives don't require ochem (the "prereq" part is just to ensure that they don't have freshmen and sophomores flooding the class)

lots of people like the idea of transferring out of revelle (not me, personally). check the old threads.

I took two years of high school Spanish back in ninth and tenth grade, unfortunately thats 4 years ago, I don't remember anything...

However for IGETC, two years of high school language fulfills their language requirements. Unfortunately, Revelle doesn't care, they say I still gotta take 4 quarters of language because they don't allow IGETC to cover the requirements.

Theres no way I'm going to pass the proficiency exam, and the sad thing is... I'm bilingual in Cantonese, but don't know how to write in it.

i dunno about you, but i think languages are cool. i'm in grad school now, and will be picking up spanish this fall -- i'm already proficient in two other languages, but neither of them are as useful as spanish. in this country, at least.

^ Same here, although I think the OP is trying to switch out of Revelle because Revelle and ERC are the only two colleges that don't accept IGETC.

But yeah, I'm sick of hearing things like "Revelle is the worst college" and "Revelle is the epitome of everything bad about UCSD". It still has its good points, and ultimately I don't think our colleges will make too much of a difference in the overall UCSD experience.

^ I've seen students with "I survived HUM" keychains. Getting through HUM is much more of an accomplishment than, say, Warren Writing or Muir writing. So you'll have something to be proud of! And you'll be able to discuss great works of literature and be proficient in a second language.

The food isn't terrible and if you're a science major, dingding, if you live-on campus, you can walk to a lot of classes in 1 minute (York).

aww i_lose and feesha, you guys are so cute and optimistic! :D

my friend melissa started those "i survived hum" keychains ... though it was possible to bum one off her if you hadn't actually finished the whole sequence.

Too bad I like Muir better because it's gonna allow me to graduate earlier, hehe. And Muirstock + the pumpkin drop rocks. :D I can't say Muir's writing program was all that awesome. It just encouraged everyone to follow really strict guidelines instead of being creative. And no brownie points if you got through the measly 2-quarter sequence, although getting at least an A- came with bragging rights. Similar to Hum, I suppose.

I would be happy to stay in Revelle if I were a freshmen, unfortunately I'm a Junior level transfer student that would be completing the IGETC by summer...

I would no longer need to take any of the HUM classes, all Revelle will do is bring me down unfortunately.

I want to spend my junior year on internships and research, not learning uno dos tres...
