Chance for School of Computer Science for Carnegie Mellon

Hi everybody,

This is my reach school and I just wanted to know if you guys could give me any feedback on my possibility of acceptance at Carnegie Mellon and into the School Of Computer Science. I am a high school senior now. Also, if you think I have a pretty unlikely chance (< 40%), could I go into the Mellon College of Science and then switch into SCS? Or could I just stay in the Mellon College of Science (as I was considering a double CS/Math major)?

White, but first generation college student
GPA: 3.87 unweighted, 4.27 weighted
Class Rank: 9/516
SAT (took four times): 660 Reading, 760 Math, 650 Writing
SAT II: 800 Chem, 800 Mathematics Level 2
AP Scholar with Distinction and Maryland Distinguished Scholar with Honorable Mention
Taking Calc III at Anne Arundel Community College (pretty sure I'll ace the class)
Had an alumni interview, went pretty well

Math Club (2 years)
National Honor Society (1 year)
Java Club (1 year)
Cross Country (3 seasons, 3 Varsity Letters)
Indoor Track (2 seasons)
Track and Field (3 seasons, 1 Varsity Letter)
(Despite the Varsity Letters I'm not that good. Last year my mile was a 5:00, haven't done a serious mile run since then...)

Volunteer at Broadneck Library weekly (about 1.5 hours a week)

1 really good recommendation letter.
1 average recommendation letter (pretty much rewrote my resume) :(

Thanks again

You have a shot and you should apply. Most people can’t really chance SCS because its so competitive.

SCS is really tough to get accepted to, like steelersngators said. But like I’ve said about 57 times on the CMU threads—if you are really interested in CMU, go for another school, any school in CMU, as many as you can apply for. Then you can take the weeder classes that would get you into SCS, do well and transfer. There do end up to be slots, as people transfer out, SCS at CMU is very, very challenging.

If you can’t transfer, plenty of people double major. No acceptance to SCS required. A major in Math (MCS) or Logic and Computation (H&SS) are very compatible with a double major, and could end up with very few extra classes taken.
