I just made corrections to my FAFSA by using the IRS data retrieval tool and checking "have filed" for myself. However, I forgot to check "have filed" for my daughter. I caught my mistake after receiving my FAFSA confirmation page email and going back to the FAFSA site to review the processed information.

The FAFSA site tells me "Current Application Status: Processed Successfully" and I can view the processed information and correction history, but I don't see anything that allows me to start a new correction.

I just completed my correction about an hour ago, if that makes a difference. Will I be able to do another correction at a later time or am I out of luck?

I just need to mark "have filed" as to my daughter's tax return, nothing else changes.

Ok, thanks - I was thinking that was the case.

I’m a little anxious because my EFC has been reduced by about $18,000 since using the IRS retrieval tool - I expected my EFC to go down a little bit but this is VERY surprising. I just want to make sure everything is correct.

Did you leave everything alone after using the DRT - that is, you didn’t change any numbers that were transferred, right? If so, you are good.

Look at the new FAFSA compared to what you originally put on the FAFSA - what changed? Something in the IRS retrieval changed the numbers you put down. Did you take the numbers off a tax return when you did it, or not? If not, maybe you put the wrong numbers in the wrong place when you did it.

I think what happened is that when I first filled in the FAFSA, it asks you whether you are eligible to file a 1040A or EZ (or something like that) and I put no because in prior years I chose to file my daughter’s interest income from her UTMAs with mine on one return - I was working off what form I used for my 2011 return.

This year since my daughter got a part time job plus some capital gains, I filed them separately and TurboTax filed mine using one of the forms where if your income is below a certain amount, they do not consider assets for EFC purposes.

At least, that’s when I’m guessing happened - I noticed the section with the type of form filed changed with the notation that it was imported from the IRS. I didn’t change anything on the FAFSA application except to mark “have filed” and use the data retrieval tool.
