does someone with a 1470 sat i, and a gpa around 3.7 stand a chance of getting in???

i’m not a wonderful writer, but i’m sure i can express why i want to go… and i’d have excellent recs… in addition to that i have fairly good ec’s

of course..........if you have an amazing hook, like seriously amazing =)

there are hundreds of people with that profile who get in every year. the thing is, they all have something that stands way out since their numbers obviousy don't. they are athletes artists great writers. those numbers wont close the door to you nor will they open it for you.

Just put your best effort into your application. Try to show the admissions office why you're unique. Go ahead, and take a chance. You have nothing to lose, except for the application fee.

meh... i don't think application fee matters, if i have even a 10% chance i'll apply :) not much of a hook, altho i have played the violin extensively... i'm a first violin in the regional orchestra... does that count?

No it doesn't count. That's not very impressive, to be honest.

jono, what is your problem? first insulting Columbia transfers, now insulting a violinist's contributions? i don't get that.

It's The Truth Do You Have A Problem?

I never insulted Columbia transfers who qualify.

Let me refer you, babybird, to a previous thread. As you'll be able to figure out, I agree with Northstarmom because she's completely right. Kids from the Juilliard Pre-college do amazingly well in college applications. I'm one of them. But do you realize how many kids are in the first violin section of a regional orchestra? It's really not that exciting to the people in Harvard admissions.

THere are many people who get in with such stats. It is a myth that only people with 5.0 averages, 1600 scores, national accomplishments can get in.

Give it your best shot, and don't rely on boards like this for advice when you decide whether it's worth it to apply. The odds for everyone are long: 10:1. As is the case with other applicants, make sure you have safeties and good match schools you'd enjoy attending.

whatever, you may have a general point about the violin, but your attitude is reprehensible.

sorry, I just get frustrated by the "is-the-local-orchestra-a-hook" question popping up again and again

he's just being realistic...a bit blunt, yes. It's better to tell the truth (which often hurts) than to falsely puff up someone's hopes.

oh well... i guess cornell it is for me :)!!!

and on a side note... the lalo symphonie espagnole is wonderfully written, i wouldn't write off a composer because oh one poor composition, which for u i guess is the cello... *jono... and thanks for being honest, i really didn't think it was that big a deal... but it could show commitment since i've been doing it since 6th grade???

Hey don't attack me. It's a good EC, good commitment, because it takes up more time than a lot of other ECs. Practicing and everything. It's just not a hook. I didn't know you could play Lalo. I don't happen to love the piece, but the technique will still make sure Harvard knows you've been practicing.

nooo... not attacking u... THANKING you haha... it's hard interpretting moods through words... but uh... yea... i actually don't really like the lalo, but the 1st and 4th movements of the violin concerto are amazing... i actually hate the rest of it... come to think of it... i really do lack a hook... i have been the target of hate crimes... i should try to play up the sympathy thing... nah, i like cornell just fine :)

oh just out of curiosity... i need an opinion as my piece to the oberlin conservatory summer program... it asked for one piece... would u pick the mendelssohn in e minor 1st or 3rd movement or the bruch in g minor... 1st movement...* it's good to get others opinions... :)

6th grade is actually fairly late to start playing the violin. Most people I know started 1st to 3rd grade, at latest.
