My counselor talked to some of the UM admissions folk...

The claim (true or not true) is that applications are done in sizeable batches, and that the first batch will not be processed until the end of this month. ie, no one is getting a real head start unless you don't land in the first batch.

Also, I believe that the first set of decisions get mailed at the end of October (or, at least, that was how it was last year even though I personally was not in that batch... I didn't even send in my application until mid-October so I didn't get a decision until mid-December). Sorry guys, but you still have a little while to wait for those as well.

Applications are read individually by readers once they are complete. They work steadily, so that part is not really a "batch" process. But after the three readers are done reading each app, the applicant gets a rating, from High Admit , Admit, Admit with Reservation, and on down to Deny.

Your rating, however, does not get you a decision. The U has a group of people who meet to discuss how many apps have been evaluated so far, what they expect yield to be, and so on, and based on those discussions they may decide something like "This week, admissions should admit all the High Admits." And thus, all those people will get admit letters.

That's where the "batch processing" comes in.

This group may also make decisions about whether to formally defer other students, or just wait and do nothing on their apps for another week.

So it's a two-step process. Everyone gets an individualized evaluation, but decisions are made based on your rating category. Evaluations and decisions aren't the same thing, even though the rating categories sound like they are! That is, you might be rated an "Admit" but not be admitted. Even "High Admits" may not be admitted if they complete their app very late in the process and the class is already full.

The group that makes the processing decisions doesn't generally meet in September. Anyone who has an application complete this month will get their app read and evaluated, and may be among the first students to get a decision. But simply having it read and evaluated is not enough to trigger an automatic decision.

I really want to apply as early as possible. As in SEPTEMBER. But my counselor apparently didn't send in her recommendation yet though I gave it to her a week ago, and my teacher refuses to send it for 2 weeks, so I have to ask ANOTHER teacher.

Hoedown,
i got a 2240 SAT combine and a 3.94 uw michigan GPA...all APs, Honors courses available were taken....
legacy in that my dad went to graduate school at mich, not sure if that counts...but im oos...
would i fit into that "high admit" category, possibly being able to get the admission as early as possible and also possible scholarships? If the "first batch" includes me could i expect it by the last week of October?...ive read people receiving acceptances as early as late October..Thanks

i know that no one knows this (duh), but when do you think i might get my response (whether it be an acceptance or a deferral)? i applied on sept 15th and got confirmation email a few days ago.

I've blabbed as much as I know or will share, but I will say this--remember that admissions and deferral are not the only two options. The dreaded, frustrating "silence" is another one.

For various reasons, some students take deferral letters hard, and treat this (erroneously) like they have been waitlisted. Therefore, there's incentive for Michigan not to send a deferral (unless they risk leaving an applicant hanging for an unreasonable amount of time). If, for example, Michigan thinks it may be able to give you a decision in a week or two or three, it's probably not going to waste the postage or emotional wear-and-tear of sending you a defer letter in the interim. Thus, you wouldn't hear anything for a few weeks, until they get around to accepting people of your stripe.

So while decisions will start to go out in late October, it's likely that there will be some people with completed applications who won't hear anything at all. For at least a little while, anyway.

LOL. Wow. I never realized how confusing the admissions process was on the part of the admissions officers. I'm now so glad I'm not one of them since I'd not only have to put up with the process but also anxious seniors awaiting decisions. It would be too taxing on my personal well being. ;)

Thank goodness that's all behind me, I'm now safe in my dorm room on campus.

Well, it's three if the first two don't agree (that is, if don't give the same rating--they do it blind, so one doesn't know what the other one said). I believe if the first two agree, the third reader (always a senior staff member in Admissions) may just give it a cursory review. Don't quote me--I'd have to double-check.

Icicle Rose, does it say "Application Complete" exactly im so confused.. mine says.. "Application is Not Complete"...does that mean they havent fully evaluated it?....however i recieved a email saying they started "processing" my application...
do they have all my stuff or not?...my SAT scores were sent last june whenever i took them, and my teacher rec and counselor recs were sent one week ago exactly....?

JudasDevotion, my status also says "Application is Not Complete". However, on the confirmation email, it says to wait at least 10 days before checking our status so they can collect and group all of our materials. They also said they would email us if we're missing anything.
