At boarding schools, do the boarders usually only hang out with boarders and day students with day students? Just curious. I visited MHS and EWS and at EWS you couldn't tell who were boarders and who were day students, which i guess is good. At MHS, i hung out with the freshwomen boarders and the whole day i was with them, they didn't interact with any day students. I don't think this is a bad thing necessarily, just curious on who I would be spending more time with.

There is some separation because you get to know more boarders because you live with them, but there are no cliques of only boarders and day students.

At NMH, the day students are strongly encouraged to stay on w/e's and, at least in my son's dorm....freshmen....many do. He has many day and boarding friends.

There's quite a large separation at Emma... Of course boarders have day student friends and vice versa, it's just more common for day students to cluster together.

The schools with little separation are those with 10-20% day students.

There's definitely a separation at my school. Of the little 'groups' in my grade, there's 'the day student group.' Not that they're not friends with us boarders, they're just closer with each other. My best friend here is a day student, though, and I'm a boarder. It's always good to have friends that are day students because they become your way off campus.

at first, there are.
but right now, at my boarding school, i'm a day student and all of my closest friends are boarders. sometimes its hard because they hang out on weekends and at nights a lot more than day students do, so you may feel left out at times.

well i can only speak for andover.

and i'm a day student and i just wanted to say that all my best friends are boarding students. at first you might feel some tension between boarders/day students because they have a dorm and day students don't. but once you get your classes you'll realize a lot of the people you have class with are boarders, and a lot are day students as well. it all depends. if you make the effort to make friends of all kinds, i'm sure you'll get friends that are day students as well as boarders.

my friend goes to a bs and she says sometimes she doesn't even realize that a friend or peer of hers may be a day or boarding student as all the students are on campus for the majority of the day.it all depends
