If you are looking to transfer, then take classes at a CC. Dont go to a UC or a Cal State and then transfer, since the classes that you take may not transfer or count.

thanks kadya :)

kadya:
how did you sign up for orientation? It starts on May 18th, and i wanna be prepared so that i can register for the first date (July13).

Where do you register for it: at the testing website, admissions page, or do you have to log into your UCInetID account???? thanks in advance

what exactly does this mean for my financial aid?
They pulled up my file for verfication, but my dad won't file until october 15.

Hello,

We do not accept tax extension. If you turn in your parents tax
return late, you will not be considered for the same financial aid
that was initial offered to you. It is very important for you to
submit the requested documents by the deadline that was given to you
which is 5/21/2007. Please contact our office at 949-824-8262, if you
need further assistance. Thank you!

thanks for the help.

srry for the last response, but even though the IRS says that your dad can file in october with no penalty or fees, uci needs the information from the tax forms so that they can accurately give you your financial aid, and make sure that you still qualify. so pretty much your parent must file immediately, even though they can file later. if you are having an accountant do the tax papers, i would ask them to do so immediately, or H&R Block is good too. however you decide to get it done is your way, it just must be turned in before the 21st.

Hey Kadya,
Is it possible to request specific people as roommates? This is my first time in a dorm, and I am extremely nervous about meeting new people, especially since I am an international student.

i think it'd be pretty cool to dorm with someone from japan.

but yes you can request roommates.

BerriEri:

yes as ShoeFactory stated, you can request certain people to be your roomate, and as long as that person has you on their wanted roommate list, and there are no conflict, most of the time you will be paired staight up. There might be a problem if you puts the other, but the other doesnt put you, or the computer messes up, or they ask for a special dorm that you dont ask for. however usually you can have a specific roommate. I suggest however to go in random, but there are good and bad sides to both, so choose at your own discretion. I have an ok roommate, i could have better, but i certainly could have much worse. if you have any other questions, let me know. when do you plan to come to UCI?

~Kadya

update: i'm still waiting for my appeals =( wonder when theyll respond.

anyways, my friend is having a dilemma and she wasn't planning to attend uci over the summer nor was planning to live in housing during that time. apparently, the contract did not allow her to sublease her housing to someone else during summer session I because she didnt specify to do so. although it was her responsibilty, it sucks to have to pay for housing when she's not even going to live in the apts. i heard there is a supervisor for every two buildings. what is your opinion and advice on "sneaking" someone in (to have someone rent out your room under your name). is it too risky?

kapb6257:

i think that you should call and figure out what is going on, because they should have gotten back to you by now with at least a response that they have gotten it, it is under review, or a decision either way. Either that or come to UCI and go into the admin building and talk to a admissions counselor in the admissions department.

so far as you friend is concerned, does she live in on campus housing?... it is pretty risky to let someone else live in your place, since if anything gets damaged or the keys get lost, you end up with the bill. i don't think that you are technically allowed to have someone there, but as long as the roommates she may be with are okay with it, i don't think people will make too much of a fuss if they don't know. give me some more details about it, so i can answer you more thoroughly.

~kadya

lets say it was me in this situation

i am currently signed up for summer session I for uci housing. it wasn't what i wanted. in fact, i was planning to go home and not even take any summer school classes at uci. now im stuck paying for 2 months for a room im not even going to be living in. the contract does not allow me to rent the room to anyone else (so that i can get my money back) because it is under my name. i would like to sublease it to someone else although it violates the contract.

however, i have heard people who have subleased it to someone else or what people would call "sneaking" someone in so that they can pay for the rent sinec they need the housing and I don't. what is your opinion on that? is it too risky? because i know if i get caught, i could lose my housing contract for the next fall term. can it be pulled off? will the admin figure out that i had let someone use my room under my name although the contract says that the room is for me and only me?

thanks

Being freshman that do not live on the apartment housing on campus, it's hard for us to help you out. The apartment housing on campus is structured in the same style as any other apartment complex (besides the privilege of subleasing) so a 1 year contract is normal. From what I see it, it seems to much of a risk to take. I wouldn't do it since the school has a contract they can shove into your face if troubles occur.

kapb6257:

i agree with jason when you put it that way. UCI housing is really stingy and stupid when it comes to sticking to the rules, and they will find any way they can to terminate your contract, just so that they can keep your money, and then rent the room you were supposed to have, to someone else, making more profit. I understand where you are coming from with this question, but i highly recommend that you dont try to violate any rules that housing sets up, just because it is a real hassle to deal with them.

~Kadya

Hey Kadya, I plan to move to California around early September. What is this SPOP event that UC Irvine keeps reminding me about? Is attendance mandatory? Are parents required to go? It is a lot of hassle for me to fly from Japan to attend a 1-day event, not to mention the costs of air fare and hotel fees.

BerriEri:

SPOP is the orientation for UC Irvine. Attendance is not mandatory, but the advising session for your major's school is required. Parents are alloewd to go.

i called them and the woman who spoke on the phone said it was a bit unusual. yikes! so she ended the call by sending an email with my info to the admin of appeals.

this was yesterday...

if they still didn't answer, it means only a good thing. hopefully!

i can probably imagine that housing is pretty full by now. is freshman housing guanteed for every freshman?

BerriEri:

Like jas0n said, you dont have to go to spop, but it is a good thing if you do, since you get to meet a lot of people who are also freshman. i would suggest that you take the 3-day spop, over th 1 day, since the one day is really rushed and you would get a greater benefit from the three day. Parent are allowed to come, but they dont have to, it is your and your parents choice on that matter.

kapb6257:

I would call back or send an email in a few days to check the progress. it may be repetitive, but you need an answer either way. I'm pretty sure that you will get housing, since it is guaranteed for freshman, but the guarantee is only in place if you follow their rules and turn everything on time. that the little disclaimer that they don't tell you about. altho for your situation, they might make exceptions since you case is kind of unusual. Update me with what happens, so i can help you through if you need to.

Thanks jas0n and Kadya.
I forgot to ask one more thing. My classmate and I are both planning to attend SPOP. Is it possible to request to be in the same spop session? My packet says that we will be living in dorms for 3 days, and we both want to be in the same dorm. Thanks.
