I have recently been in contact with an MD at a medium bank in Texas. He asked for my resume, writing sample, and transcripts. I sent them to him and he sent me a message bank saying that I am definitely someone that he would be interested in interviewing for an IB internship. He said that he was not sure of how many interns they would be looking to hire for this summer, but that I should keep in contact with him until they finalize their plans sometime in late January.

My question is, what does he mean by "Keep in contact"? How exactly do I keep in contact? Should I just shoot him an email every couple of weeks reminding me of who I am and my interest? What exactly should I say.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!

Every couple of weeks is probably too often. I’m not sure when you began speaking with him, but if I were you I would have checked in probably around now (for the first time), a little more than a month ahead of when he said they would be finalizing things. That would allow sufficient time for an interview. If they still weren’t sure of things, I would check in again in a few weeks (early-mid January).

Next time when you receive a “keep in contact” email, you should try and specify a date. Just FYI and for future references for anyone who receives a “keep in contact” email, a good way to respond would be

“Thank you very much for your evaluation. As you know, I am very interested in the IB internship. I will follow up before end of January. If plans are finalized prior to end of January, please let me know”.

After you write this email, follow up about mid January. Make sure you forward the email where you said you would follow up and ask

"Hi ___, just following up on my previous email. I am still very interested in the IB internship. Has there been any progress on headcount and has the plans for interns been finalized?

If he replies no and does not provide a date, reply

“Thank you very much. I will follow up again in about a months time. Here is an updated version of my resume, transcript and writing sample”.

By keep in touch, you simply want to touch base in your case about once a month or so - essentially after the new year wishing him a happy new year (no need to shout your interest in the internship again, just a casual email) and then again early February (if he hasn’t already gotten back to you) to ask if there has been any movement regarding internship opportunities and thank him again for considering your candidacy and keep you informed of opportunities with the firm. Don’t jump down his throat at the end of January, give them an extra week or 2 and then follow up.

For following up, keeping it simple is the key - unless he responds with questions, you don’t need more than those 2 emails. If there is no movement and he tells you to wait till the summer, then you can keep in touch every other month or so until it gets close to the internship application time.

Okay, so I’m in a similar situation like I know a couple MD’s at GS & I know the Vice President of NASDAQ OMX, she’s a very good mentor to me but I don’t know how to use the contacts I have. Do I email them and update them on what I am doing this summer, whatever it is? I’m hoping to prepare for an internship at GS next summer (I’m a sophomore btw). I’ve been obsessed with GS since high school and I’ve done some of the discovery programs so far but since I come from a non-target school I’m thinking I need to network like crazy this summer if I even want to be considered in the Fall! Any advice for me?

p.s. sorry for posting on your post, just wanted to ask question!
