Kelley DA and IB

Can anyone tell me about how to get accepted into the IB workshop? Is this an opportunity only for Kelley Scholars or is it open to anyone in Kelley with the required GPA, etc? It seems like a great opportunity if one can get into the workshop.

The minimum required GPA for applying is 3.5. It is open to anyone in Kelley with the required GPA, but the selection process is very competitive, and many of the selected are business honors students.

Members are selected during the fall semester of a student’s junior year, and the workshop is a 15-month commitment (generally October of a student’s junior year to December of the student’s senior year). Accepted members must be present on campus during this time period and be active participants. Any exceptions must be specifically approved by Professor Haeberle in advance.
Thanks for that information! How many people are selected each year?

The selection process has been moved to the Spring of Sophomore year. I just had my interviews yesterday. It’s actually open to anyone in IU with the required GPA, but is a pretty rigorous selection process. They select between 34-36, and this year 84 applied.

Hopefully in two weeks I’ll be able to actually give advice as someone in the workshop, but I’ll say this for now.

I think the best advice for an incoming freshman would be to focus on getting good grades and getting involved. There are a lot of Greek guys in the workshop, so join a fraternity if that’s your thing. If a fraternity is not for you, make sure you get involved in the “good” Kelley student organizations. You’ll quickly realize which ones these are once you get on campus.

More specific to the workshop, try and get to know the kids in the grade above you who are in the workshop. It was a huge help for me throughout the recruiting process to know so many of the people in the workshop, and many of them I came to know as a freshman by getting involved in Kelley.

There are three key attributes that will help you in your application to the Workshop.

1) GPA. No way around it, a better GPA makes a better applicant. That being said, GPA is not everything.

2) Experiences/resume. Leadership positions in business and non-business clubs as well as an internship or two before you apply. Doesn’t need to be in finance (although that would help). I interned part-time at the homeless shelter in Bloomington during the year, and then in the asset management division of an insurance company sophomore summer.

3) Interviewing ability. You need to come off as likable and competent. This skill comes naturally to some people, but not others. I was the latter, and the only way to overcome it is to schedule mock interviews with juniors and seniors and ask for constructive criticism.

Feel free to PM me more questions if you would like (alum of the program).

What kinds of jobs do students who participate in the workshop get after graduation? What about summer internships? Are Kelley kids able to get the same internships as students who attend top 20 ranked universities?
