Son directly admitted to Kelley in Fall of 2017. 2nd semester now complete and he got a C- in BUS-G 202 (Bus Gov’t & Soc) in spring 2018. Does he need to retake this class and get a C or better in order to be eligible to enter i-core in year 3. C- nothing to be proud of but not like it’s a D or F. Any way around this considering the expense (OOS tuition) and simply time lost. Kelley requires you to graduate with 2.0 or higher so just not sure if a C- is that big of deal. If have to repeat, can this be taken elsewhere, back home over summer
I am a parent of IU Kelley student. Have your son place a call and/or e-mail to his Kelley Advisor for guidance and feedback on the class to better understand what the requirements are and if he has to take at IU or not. Good luck.
I would do what gopher119 said, but he’s going to have to take it again because you need at least a C in all I-Core prereqs. I’m not sure if you can take G202 somewhere else and transfer the credit or not.
Son in exactly the same situation. If he repeats G202 next semester, does anyone know how the courses (initial and repeat) factor into his GPA? We have looked online and cannot get a clear answer. It IU’s “EX Policy” the policy one follows to repeat a course and have the initial grade replaced? Does Kelley follow that IU policy? Thank you.
Hello! I actually found myself in this situation this past semester. I however was a sophomore so I just finished taking the 4-week class over summer during May to be eligible for Icore in the fall. You can retake the class and then it will switch the grade for your overall IU GPA but not your Kelley one unfortunately. This really doesn’t matter that much except for potentially scholarships that need to be over a certain threshold, etc. The Overall GPA is what most people report on their resumes anyway if that was a concern at all. There is a form online called the Kelly Ex Petition Form that allows for you to do this. You can only do it 3 times though so just take note of that.
Taking it in the summer compared to the school year was a Wildly different experience! It helped because I was able to replace my C- with an A and fix the blow it took to my GPA. The class over the summer was open note (for my professor) and the average on the exams never fell below the A territory. If taking it over the summer isn’t an option then because he is a freshman he can take it again during the school year, I would suggest spending time before the class starts to review the material just to stay on top of things, mainly because sophomore year pre reqs are very time consuming and it can be difficult to allocate the proper amount of study time to each difficult course. Im free to answer in more questions if you have them!
Side Note (G202 is only available in person at IU so there are no off campus or online options unfortunately)
Was it the same exact material the second time you took the course? Same teacher, case studies, exams, workload etc…As of now son is not even registered to take it a second time as all classes are full. He’s waitlisted. Since it’s primarily a sophomore class (he took it as a Freshman) and his priority for registration was low going into fall of his sophomore year, the classes were already full when he went to sign up. Very frustrating.
It was the same material but we didn’t learn it in the same sequence as during the school year. There was actually less information than that of the class I’m the normal school year. There were 7 cases instead of 9 as 2 were omitted. The slides were pretty much everything that was mentioned in the school year class just a bit lighter. The teacher was different, I believe she was a past TA or the male who teaches during the school year. G202 is a class that I can see opening up in terms of the waitlist so that very well may hold out. Otherwise it shouldn’t be difficult to get in to for the second semester. What stinks about G202 is that you can only take it at IU and it is difficult scheduling wise if working with a tight schedule
@pipipipi Since you just completed year 2…In your opinion is this a manageable fall sophomore schedule of 14 credits? And then thoughts on spring. I can take Fin Acct this summer (5 week class at local community college) and transfer the credit to lighten the load in the fall if necessary. Advisor suggested taking acct at IU as the manner in which they teach it will be helpful to other classes later on. Thanks for any feedback you can offer.
