Do you go to HA or CDH?..Tell your parents to suck it up and pay the $...it is not likely you will get much more $ % of total cost wise from a college in the same category as Kenyon. If they won't pay, I hope you also applied to a few mid-tier schools where a full academic scholarship is a possibility. Otherwise say hello to Madison or the U of M...def not going to be the same experience though if you are interested in English....and really only about 35% less than the cost of Kenyon with your 20K/yr.

Try to use some of that logic with them, but maybe in a more calm and friendly manner :)

Also, it would help to know where else you are accepted and level of aid (% of total cost) to give you and your parents the best advice.

One more thing, why pay for an expensive private school and then not continue for college? You could have attended one our fine suburban schools and ended up in the same place...

I go to HA, and although I have been offered some full scholarships (for example at Ohio Wesleyan, my second chouce), I'm obviously running through tons of different scenarios to try and make Kenyon cost-effective. I realize that by going to Kenyon I put myself in a tough financial spot, so I'm weighing my (quite considerable) drive to go to Kenyon and leaving college in the red against the prospect of going somewhere else and leaving college in the black. While it may seem obvious to some, it's very difficult for me, and I've been over it with my parents several times who are (sadly) just standing by and watching my college fund crash and burn in the stock market (thanks parents...) but not doing anything in the hopes it will recover... It's also rather hard to get more money out of my parents (I've tried) when next year they will have, including me, 3 kids in college, making maneuvering for more money a really dangerous, potentially rift-inducing thing in an already tension-filled family.

The saddest part is that my parents will likely contribute less to college than they did to my tuition at high school which, considering the educational systems in Minnesota (as you so pointed out :) ) is rather disheartening. The whole religion thing is rather lost on me too, so as far as investments go, yeah... But I liked high school so I'm not bitter about that. Just that college is shaping up not what I thought it would be.

On average I've been offered aid packages from schools that are about 35-40% of total cost. I'm searching endlessly for scholarships and am considering students loans which, all things considered, would wind up being (at my last calculation) about $15,000-$18,000 total borrowed upon leaving Kenyon. Am I reconciled to this? This is what I'm considering. Advice?

18k is not too bad of a payment...maybe 200-250 a month or so depending on rates...which should be low right now and get you towards the lower 200s/mo. I would go to Kenyon if that is all you will have for debt. It is a low price to pay for the Kenyon experience and well worth it.
