Any opinions on Kenyon vs. Colgate? My son is interested in pre-med and history and running.

Kenyon is great for all of those…Colgate is just a toothpaste. :)

Colgate is ranked higher than Kenyon academically; at least according to US News review. I just looked at Forbes and saw Kenyon was ranked above Colgate significantly. I wonder if one is ranked is 18 or so (US news for Colgate) and the other at 30 or so (Kenyon) , if there is really a significant difference? I wonder about Kenyon’s very small student population at 1600 compared to Colgate’s 2700-- is there enough to do and enough breadth of coursework to keep students interested all 4 years at Kenyon?

How is the pre-med program? How many students are pre-med at Kenyon in any given class?

My son wants to run track and I wonder how realistic this is if he is pre-med? He ran all 4 years in high school and although this would be a great way for him to make friends immediately on campus; he certainly is not going to grow up to be a track star!

Track is no problem if you’re pre-med. You can get through college taking a pretty normal course load so long as you are majoring in biology or chemistry. If you want to double up with say English, do pre-med and do sports I could see how one might get overwhelmed junior year. The track teams not great anyway, so I wouldn’t worry about that. There’s enough to do at Kenyon, but it is nice to get away every now and again. There’s something fun to do everyday aside from classes, sports and work.

The difference between Forbes and US News is that US News looks at selectivity and the college’s financial ability as the principle measure for ranking, whereas Forbes looks at the individuals who graduate in terms of the scholarships they receive, what graduates go on to accomplish, acceptance rates to med schools are so on.

I’m not sure how many students are pre-med in each class. I would think it would be between 15 and 40, but I have no way of knowing.

Are you a student or parent?

You mention there is enough to do at Kenyon…it doesn’t get too small after 4 years? I have never seen that many kids on campus other than at the dining hall…where do kids hang out?

Do you feel there is enough academic breadth and stimulation despite its size and isolated location? My son thinks the campus is beautiful but I worry if the size might be limiting.
