For those who have been accepted already, when will we get our kits for indoc and reporting day?

When you DO get your kit, you'll be amazed that the paperwork has just begun :) .

We didn't realize how much they hate wisdom teeth (they want to avoid impacted wisdom teeth at sea .. ). So... you get to CHOOSE when you want yours out :) -- before prom, before graduation, before senior year vacation, or by some nice government employee at a time of THEIR choosing.

The sooner the better.

-We got several mailings, late March/early April, if I remember.

You will get a lot of things in the mail, but if you want to be totally prepared, here is a link to the 2008 Guidebook.

Also, on the parent's page of the KP website you will find lots of information about indoc, etc. Indoc is 10 July this year and I suggest you make your hotel reservation now. There is a link on the parents page to local hotels as well. Best of luck to you.

Is it REQUIRED that we get our wisdom teeth out!? My ortho has told me several times that I don't need my wisdom teeth removed..!!

If you don't have them removed, you will require a letter from an oral surgeon to that effect. We had to rush around and had the procedure the day before Prom....by son was a lovely little chipmunk

omgitslauren03, the Academy told my son that he would not be allowed to go to sea with them intact & his were fine according to his dentist. There is no written policy that I've been able to lay hands on to share here. I was told by the KP dental department that this is indeed their policy on the matter.

Just be aware that your Ortho & KP might see things differently so perhaps one phone call can clarify the matter quickly so that you can plan. Semper Gumby!!

My son got the same story. It seems that the Academy is very concerned with the possibility of the Mids getting impacted/infected wisdom teeth and ending up in a hospital in a third world country that is not quite up to our standards.
Sure was fun trying to get an appointment on such short notice while trying to juggle graduation and finishing the requirements for his private pilots license.

I just talked to a 3rd class mid & his parents this weekend who did not have his wisdom teeth out before going to sea, and is not going to have them out. Apparently it took a lot of collaboration between dentist/oral surgeon/kp dentist/parents but they got a waiver because he does not need them out.

My s had his out between first & second Sea Year over Christmas break, but the Academy was not involved, his were impacted. I don't recall a requirement that said you HAD to have them out, I think that's relatively new. He entered KP in '02. He only got his braces off about month before Indoc as his teeth developed slowly, so I don't know what would have happened if he was required to have the wisdom teeth out before Indoc.

It seems to me that there was some information specifically addressing wisdom teeth in the packet we received. It also mentioned a minimum amount of time that must elapse between the extraction and the report date for indoc. I think it was either four or six weeks. I don't think it is really an issue until it is time to go to sea. But, if you are a "B" splitter that time can really sneak up on us as parents. It seems to take forever for the plebes of course. :)
