Hey everyone!
I’m entering my sophomore year at college right now. I have three careers I’m considering: lawyer/attorney, professor/academic, or journalist.
My interests are mainly politics, foreign affairs, history, and crime. I’m doing research on corruption in the international arena.
Should I major just in government, gov and econ, public policy, or IR? I need to get a job post grad or straight into law school.
Out of the three areas you listed, the only one you can major in is journalism. You can certainly major in government or econ, and go to law school with any of those majors.
- Law school doesn’t require any specific major;
- There are professors of everything;
- Journalism doesn’t require any specific major, either.
Honestly, particularly with disparate interests like this, you should pick what you and what you think you can focus on for four years. “Government” usually isn’t a major, but political science is. Either political science, economics, public policy, or international relations would be a good choice for people interested in any of these careers. So if you’re interested in one of them, pick that.
Whether or not you’re employed post-college depends more on what you do in college and what kind of experience you get than on your major. Do internships and learn skills that put you in demand with employers.
