Korean Thread

haha thanks... My dad's a bit disappointed that I didn't fair well with the top ivy schools, but then Brown was my second choice only after Yale... so I'm happy :D

My school did pretty well this year with American applications...I think... It's a small private with a graduating class of 58, and we have one harvard (hockey recruit), one brown, 4 cornell, 1 amherst, 2 hopkins, 3 Northwestern, 3 Emory, 2 WUSTL, 2 BU, 1 Georgia tech, 1 RPI, 1 syracuse and other acceptances for... I think 10 people... So.. that's pretty decent in my opinion...(4 of those 10 are the four Koreans in my grade... lol we have only like 10 Koreans in the whole school and 4 of them are Gr.12;)) the rest of the class are probably gonna go to other Canadian, British, and Australian universities with most of them going to UBC and Queens... I can't wait to take the AP exams... then I have like only one class a day until the end of the school year!!

By the way... I wonder how many Koreans are going to Brown...

I think if you take the given % of Asian-Americans in the school and divide by 3, you'll probably get a rough estimate.

I know at least two people from my school are going.

hm.. really... other sources told me that it had around 40 koreans in the whole university and I thought that was a very small number... hm...

wow, i like how the korean thread is becoming more active :)

obviously im korean as well :p and i live in edmonton, alberta, canada.

nice to meet you guys!

those of you who got into ivies, do you mind writing your credentials for us to see?? im in gr. 11 and im quite anxious, to be honest. =)

nice... another fellow Korean living in Canada... WELCOME!

eTHeReaLkEv, that probably means Koreans from Korea itself. What I meant was Korean Americans + Korean Koreans.

hm.. is that right? I don't know... anyways... any Korean from CC going to Brown next year?

In korea, which school is the most prestigious (considered)?
Also, which school do YOU guys think I should go to?

I was accepted to Biomedical Engineering to the following schools:

Johns Hopkins, Wesleyan, Georgetown, Northwestern, University of Texas, Dartmouth, Tufts, Cornell, Georgia Tech, Amherst, University of Chicago, MIT

For schools that don't have BME, I got in for Biochem or Biological Sciences, etc. on the same line....

Suggestions please?

I'd say.. definitely Hopkins or MIT. For people who actually know about BME, they would know that JHU BME is the top program in the States, but the name value of MIT is hard to ignore if you consider what ordinary Koreans think.

I'd say MIT just in case you wish to change your engineering major. And yeah, the name's hard to ignore. And it's not like the MIT BME sucks or anything.

Etherealkev: did you read about the twin korean girls both going to brown next year? i think it's in chosun ilbo or something like that.

ForceFX:

Same senario here. My major is going to be biomedical engineering and I have been accepted to

Harvard, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, UC Berkeley, Washington U in St. Louis, UCLA,

Now, I know JHU BME is the best in the nation, and without much exaggeration, the best in the world. And Cornell and Berkeley are strong at what we would tradtionally call "engineering."

To some people's surprise, I chose Harvard. Harvard BME is obviously not as good as JHU (heck, even MIT BME pales in front of JHU, although major reforms at MIT will change that in years). But then, I want to go to med school and I thought that it is definitely more advantageous if I do undergrad at Harvard. (for your info, MIT undergraduate med school acceptance rate (%) is in the 70's while harvard has in the 90's. There are many threads in this forum addressing this issue.)

So, my thoughts are that you may need to consider what you want to do after undergrad. If you are truly an engineering hardcore, and want to be a practicing engineer, by all means, go to MIT. If you want truly BME, go to JHU. Or if you want to go to Med school like I do, Amherst is a fine choice although I don't think Amherst all that strong in any engineering.

Oh, one note. MIT BME is extremely good. There are only three colleges that rank higher than MIT in BME: Johns Hopkins, UCSD, Duke.

just my 2 cents. Again, congrats to your acceptance to those colleges!

THe top 3 prestigious schools from korea's perspectives, from your list:
1. MIT
2. Johns hopkins
3. University of Chicago

yay! koreans !!! im also korean wow this is really a lot of krns !

No surprise for choosing Harvard over others there... especially if you are doing premed. I see a lot of guys doing premed are doing BME... Isn't that pretty bad though? I mean, yeah I was once interested in BME as well before I met neuroscience, but getting good enough marks in engineering while doing all the extracurricular activities and enjoying your college life... will be hard, I think. That's what all the 선배's told me. A 선배 at Duke went to Pratt for BME and then transferred to CAS because of this exact reason.

hello123: no I have not heard of such news... perhaps I should check the Korean news website... hm.. I don't remember it among the headlines... If that's true.. that's awesome:D

eTheRealkev, You definitely have a point: having an engineering major and premeding at the same time consumes a lot of energy, especially to keep a high GPA in engineering major is tough.

But then again, lots of required courses for premed is in BME major, and although I don't intend to belittle humanity or art majors, majoring in some sort of science prepares a student a science background that may be more advantageous to understanding medical science.

just 2 cents. I wonder how many koreans in Harvard?

anyways any korean for columbia? I know one person who's korean (vgboy) but else no one. Hit me up if ur gonna be lion 2010.

I didn't know Chicago was so high up. Maybe it is in BME, which I don't know so much about.

No, i mean from korea's general public, they know of those schools (name) better than the others like amherst, dartmouth, etc..

That's true. I would have applied Amherst ED if my dad hadn't protested so virulently. But I wish you had the decency to place Cornell along with Chicago ;)
