Hello everyone, while I have been trolling on here a while, this is my first post. My son was recently admitted into IU's business school and Purdue's business school. Does anyone have an opinion on which program is best? He thinks he would like to become a CPA or possibly an actuary, obviously that is subject to change. I know the Kelley school of business is highly ranked, but I think that Purdue may have a better name (or is this just for engineering). Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. We are planning on visiting both schools in March, and I realize that the visit should help him determine the better fit, but I am just looking for opinions on recruitment, job placement, etc. Thank you so much in advance!

I’m a Direct Admit freshman at Kelley this year and I’m trying not to be biased, but I’ve got to say Kelley has a much better name that Purdue, especially when it comes to Business. If he plans on leaving the mid-west, I would definitely recommend IU.

The Big 4 LOVE Kelley. If your son comes to Kelley and lives in the KLLC which I recommend, the Big 4 are waiting for us on MOVE IN DAY. I know of no other school that has something like that. And it’s all because they know that time and time again Kelley students deliver. Kelley is E&Y’s second most recruited school in the world!

I am by no means an accounting major. Hate Accounting!!! And I still made second round interview for a PWC internship this summer…AS A FRESHMAN!

I don’t hear Purdue b-students saying things like that.

Also if he wants to be a CPA, he’ll more than likely have to do the 3/2 program to get enough credits to be one. meaning he’ll get his ** & MBA in 4 years. And guess who’s MBA program just became #4 for public universities…Kelley.

It’s also #1 in Teaching Quality, Student Satisfaction and Career Services…

Purdue is better known for engineering. IU doesn’t have an engineering program.

Kelley is ranked higher than Krannert and has been for a long time. It’s not that Krannert is bad. Kelley is just better.

Regarding actuarial studies. Neither school has an actuarial science major. I believe Ball State does as does Butler. IU and Purdue prepare students for actuary exams, etc in a very similar way-through the math department. At both schools one will need to do independent study for qualifying actuary exams. That is the case in most programs. Actuarial candidates do a lot of independent study.

Without going into great detail as it is identifying info, I know a lot about the educational program one must complete to become an actuary. From what I can see, in various spots, IU and Purdue have similar programs and support for future actuaries. Getting hired as an actuary is about internships and exam completion. soa.org has further details.

Thank you so much ohsnapitsfaux, sounds very impressive! I get so confused with all the rankings, it is really good to hear from a current student. We are from Maryland, and other then his hesitancy because it is so far away from home, I think it is safe to say that IU is his #1 choice. Can I ask you if IU was overwhelming as a freshman, because it is so large? Was it easy to make friends and feel at home? Thank you so much for your response, and I read another post that you wrote - good luck on your second round interviews for your internship!!!

Rrah, thank you for the information on actuarial studies. We noticed that it is a rare major at most universities. I will pass this info to my son. Thanks again!

Personally I dont think you can go wrong with either B school…but the campuses do have very different feel. Have you visited both, I think that may make your decision easier.
Krannert is much more computer science/mgmt. oriented…Kelley much more Entrep./Marketing/retail oriented. Both schools are heavily recruited. Krannert also has the 3+2 program for MBAs… Kelley may, not sure.

Hey boymomof2, I’ll be more than happy to answer your questions.
So in regards to feeling overwhelmed to the size of IU, at first you don’t really know where anything is and you don’t know where the buses take you, but i never felt overwhelmed by it. Things definitely get easier the more you walk and take the buses, so definitely by the first month your son should have no problem navigating IU.
Now when it comes to making friends, it is so easy to connect with people in college just because you guys already have a lot in common, whether you live on the same floor, have the same class, are apart of the same club etc. Like I said before I live in the KLLC so it’s a dorm filled with people with similar mindsets. I am closer with then then I am with my high school friends. Everyone tries to make an effort to be nice. I love my floor more than anything else, and I know that doesn’t happen with a lot of people, but my floor is great.
For more info on the LLC or IU, you should check out WeAreIU.com it’s a blog site for prospective students. My LLC post, [Living in the Kelley LLC… Pictures & Videos & Links, Oh MY! - Meanwhile In Bloomington | We Are IU](http://www.weareiu.com/blog/meanwhile-in-bloomington/living-in-the-kelley-llc-pictures-and-videos-and-links-oh-my), is one of the popular posts.

ohsnapitsfaux, love the links, thank you so much! He is definitely going to apply to the KLLC. I was told that to apply, you have to write 5 additional essays. The LLC emailed us and told us that the application would be up mid-Jan. Just curious, what sort of topics do they ask you for the application, and how long are the essays? Thanks!
