So by the end of next spring i will have finished linear/differential equations and data structures.

that means i will only have 2/8 classes needed to be accepted into l&s cs. Would this hurt my chances of being accepted? If i do get accepted, would I have to take all 6 classes in the summer to catch up?

Do you mean that you are a prospective transfer student who has taken CS 61B and Math 54 at a community college, but does not have the other prerequisites available?

You may want to look at the sample schedules for incoming transfer students here:
[CS Transfer Prerequisites | EECS at UC Berkeley](http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/csugrad/preparingtoapply.shtml#samples)

yea i took calc 1, 2, and i’m taking calc 4 (linear/differential) next semester.

and i took a look at the sample schedules and the one that applies to me is the last one that says “no CS61ABC available at your school” and it pretty much says that i’ll be taking cs 61 a - c in the span of 3 semester and then it says “2 - 3 semesters to go”
that would be about 6 semesters. but I remember reading on their website that they have a semester limit of like 4 semesters. how will i get to do 6?

Hearty: You can petition for a 5th, though 6 semesters seems unlikely. Consider taking summer classes (or even doubling up 61A and B over the summer, if you know java) to catch up. If you’re able to do that, it should either put you one semester behind or on track to finish in 4 semesters.

If you can get CS 61A and CS 70 or EE 42 in the summer at Berkeley, then you can perhaps do it in 4-5 semesters.

The L&S unit cap policy is here: [Office of Undergraduate Advising: Unit Ceiling](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/registration/unitceiling.html)

It would help if you had all possible other requirements like IGETC or breadth and anything for L&S CS that is available at your CC (or others nearby) completed at CC, so that you won’t have to use up your units on courses that could have been taken at CC.

thanks for the reply guys.

and i have another question. Next semester I am taking Calc 4, data structures, and physics magnetism. The reason I’m taking physics magnetism is because my councelor suggested it to look more “competitive” on my transcript because the more rigorous classes you take the better you look. But magnetism physics isn’t even a requirement for l&s cs is it? I didn’t see it anywhere

so i’m thinking. should i drop that physics class and add the 2 GE courses i need to finish my igetc?

Nope, E&M is by no means required. But I’ve heard it helps a tiny bit in EE42, so it’s up to you. Having said that, if your goal is L&S, please drop it and finish the IGETC instead. If you don’t finish either the IGETC or the 7-course breadth by the end of Spring 2013, your application is voided.

It is also advantageous to have exactly 60 transferable units, so that you have the maximum space under the 130 unit ceiling. So try to maximally cover IGETC/breadth, major, and other requirements with the minimum possible units at CC. Note that it is possible to go significantly past the unit ceiling by careful scheduling. For example, if your fourth or later semester after transfer ends with 129 units, you can have another semester, but if your fourth or later semester ends with 131 or more units, your future fall or spring registration will be blocked.

Also, there is the 80 unit limit for junior transfers. If all of your units come from CCs, then it does not apply, but if you have a lot of transferable units (i.e. 72 or more) from CC, then you may be prevented from taking summer courses like CS 61A and CS 70 at Berkeley before your first regular semester at Berkeley.

You can also try to see if satisfying L&S breadth is easier by checking ASSIST for articulated courses for the courses listed here under L&S requirements:
[Office of Undergraduate Advising: Summary of Degree Requirements](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/summary.html)

Also, check on ASSIST to see if any course at your CC covers the Berkeley American Cultures requirement.

Since you applied to LS, you MUST finish IGETC. You don’t even need to have electromagnetism for CS (L&S), on the other hand if you don’t finish your IGETC you can’t get in.
