I was recently accepted to the L&S College as a spring admit and am interested in Comp sci.

I am curious because I was looking at the prereqs for declaring the major..

I did Math 1A, 1B (Calc 1/2) and Math 54 (linear algebra/ differential equations) @ my cc. We have no comp sci classes here (equivalent to the 61 series) however and the major requires CS 61A, 61B, 61C, CS 70 and EECS 42.

How long will it take for me to finish all the prereqs? Because when I looked at the sample programs it looked like I have to stay at least another year or so to finish all the upper div work and the prereqs. Is anyone else in a similar situation?

The site said I can only declare if I have all the prereqs done. But it also says I have to declare in my first semester and I really don't see how anyone can get all these prereqs done in the first sem if the 61 series isn't offered at the CC.

I was going for EECS but the requirements are very similar. the 61ABC requirements are more highly recommended as opposed to required but if any of the colleges around you have no articulation for it, you don’t have to take them. Just make sure to state that in the Other Information prompt you will have to use when filling out your application. But i would definitely recommend at least taking C and C++ if possible. Is Calc 3 or Discrete Math not required by L&S either?

For L&S CS, you probably want to look at the following:

[CS Transfer Prerequisites | EECS at UC Berkeley](http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/csugrad/preparingtoapply.shtml#samples)
[Prospective Undergraduate Information | EECS at UC Berkeley](<a href=“Undergraduate Admissions & Programs | EECS at UC Berkeley”>Undergraduate Admissions & Programs | EECS at UC Berkeley)

L&S CS does require discrete math (CS 70, which is almost the same course as Math 55) but does not require multivariable calculus (Math 53).

What area are you in? You may want to check [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) for CS 61A, CS 61B, CS 70 / Math 55, and EE 42 equivalent courses at every community college in your area, so that you can try to take them in the summer and fall. Taking some of them in the summer at Berkeley is also a theoretical option, but [Home Page - Online Schedule Of Classes](http://schedule.berkeley.edu) lists them as full or close to it.

You can also self-study the course material listed on the course home pages here:
[EECS Course WEB Sites](CAS - Central Authentication Service)
so that you can be more ready to take them when you arrive at Berkeley.

Thank you both for your help. I’ll check out the sites you sent me, thanks again.

Hi. I am a fall admit for L&S w/ an intended major of Computer Science. I am planning to graduate after 2 years. Therefore, I am taking CS61A and EE42 this summer. CS61C, CS70 and CS47B(my course was half comparable so I need 47B instead of 61C) in the Fall. I will have 3 semesters of upper division which is doable.

wow, 61A is a rough course to take in 18 weeks let alone 6. I hope you know what you’re in store for. If you want to start getting into the 61A lectures now, check out academicearth.org. They have the lectures on that site.

It’s actually 8 weeks. And a semester is 16 weeks. Yep, I have been watching the cs61A lectures on UCBerkeley’s official youtube page. Thanks for the thought! Are you going to Cal too?

I wish, but I’ve satisfied the whole 61ABC sequence. I took 61A with a former Cal student who taught it exactly the same way so we had to do the 4 projects and all the homework normally assigned. The good thing is that if you’re stuck on something, there’s a ton of resources online if you’re using the same Scheme compiler as Berkeley.

You go to Laney College, perhaps the only community college that has a CS 61A equivalent course?

Yup, haha. Although I had to go up to DVC to take care of 61C. But from what I heard, 61C changed last year so that probably went out of the window.

Yeah, I heard they redesigned the curriculum for cs61C as well. Silenthillnight, what school are you at now?

I’m transferring from Laney to either UCD or hopefully UCSD or USC. UCB denied me 2 years in a row, guess I’m just not destined to be there, haha.
