Any Berkeley L&S Comp Science Majors here?

I was recently accepted to the L&S College as a spring admit and am interested in Comp sci.

I am curious because I was looking at the prereqs for declaring the major..

I did Math 1A, 1B (Calc 1/2) and Math 54 (linear algebra/ differential equations) @ my cc. We have no comp sci classes here (equivalent to the 61 series) however and the major requires CS 61A, 61B, 61C, CS 70 and EECS 42.

How long will it take for me to finish all the prereqs? Because when I looked at the sample programs it looked like I have to stay at least another year or so to finish all the upper div work and the prereqs. Is anyone else in a similar situation?

The site said I can only declare if I have all the prereqs done. But it also says I have to declare in my first semester and I really don't see how anyone can get all these prereqs done in the first sem if the 61 series isn't offered at the CC.

xViral - are you looking at the L&S CS degree requirements? I see on this page [Undergraduate L&S CS Students | EECS at UC Berkeley](CS Major Information | EECS at UC Berkeley) that yiou have to declare by the END of your SECOND SEMESTER, which gives you an entire year to wrap up those other requirements.

on this page [CS Transfer Prerequisites | EECS at UC Berkeley](http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/csugrad/preparingtoapply.shtml#samples) at the bottom they say "Sample Programs for Incoming CS Transfer Students
These sample programs for incoming transfer students help you guide your way through your years at Berkeley. Keep in mind that they are only suggested programs, used while planning your own schedule. Some courses can also be taken during Berkeley summer sessions to satisfy CS major prerequisites, thereby allowing you to apply to the major earlier. (See more information on Applying for the Major.)

Sample Programs

Keep in mind:

EE42 could have been satisfied with an introduction to electrical circuits course and calculus based physics through electricity at your community college.
If you think you have waived any technical requirements based on work experience, self-knowledge, or courses taken at a 4 year college for which we have no standard equivalencies established, please contact Brian Harvey, bh@cs.berkeley.edu "

Thus, they are hinting that you could make a case to perhaps waive a class, plus you could take one of these this summer here at Cal and then in your Fall semester before you get here, do an intro to EE course plus a calculus based physics course. That would knock off EE42 and you could get a head start with one of the CS61 classes this summer. Then yoiu would have all of Spring and all of the following Fall to finish the remaining three classes, declaring during Fall once you are actively in the last prereq classes.

Not a CS major but know how to work the web pages around here.

Oh wow, I looked at that page when I was writing the post and I completely missed where it said " Transfer students are required to complete their technical prerequisites and declare the major at the end of their first or second semester at UC Berkeley". That’s pretty awesome.

Thanks a lot!

Hey there,
I asked the same exact question and I’m in your boat as well. I’m gonna be finishing my math 54 this summer. I called someone from Berkeley at the L&S dept. and she said that it would probably take me an extra semester to finish the degree… which i’m fine with. Good luck!
