La Regencia Apartments...

Hey, this may be a bit off topic regarding schools but supposedly my friends are moving into this apartment and if I go to UCSD, I'll be moving in with them. According to apartmentratings.com, this apartment has HORRIBLE ratings (Link To Ratings) and my friends "already have their eyes set on it." I guess is it true that this place is that bad? I'd rather live somewhere nice instead of somewhere crappy. Thanks.

My D lived there for a couple of years. It's a very nice apartment complex with pretty large apartments. The grounds are kept very nice and she never had an issue with maintenance. They have a very nice workout room, nice pools, decent outside BBQ areas, etc.

The biggest downside is the parking. A lot of the under building assigned parking is very tight and difficult to maneuver unless you have a small (or no) car. There's not much guest parking.

It's literally next door to a Vons shopping center so it's very convenient for groceries - just walk. It's also right next to the UCSD shuttle and city bus stops.

Be wary of those ratings sites. They're often very heavily skewed to the negative since those are about the only ones who bother to post. I think La Regencia is one of the nicer choices for off-campus apartments.

All apartments are fairly generic, pick one that you like best. (And near UCSD Cityshuttle, of course)

la regencia is decent, and a lot of UCSD students live there. it's one of the cheaper ones and i'd describe it as "basic but adequate" i lived there for three years. we had crappy parking spots but eventually switched into a bigger one (i had an SUV) after complaining. maintenance always responded promptly, and our rent for a 2br/2ba was $400/mo.

(fwiw, i pay $780 now in new york)

As ucsducladad pointed out (and i think its worth re-emphasizing after just having signed for an apartment), people with bad experiences are the ones that mainly post on those sites.

I hear it's not that bad. It's old, and I've heard reports of mold and crazy neighbors, but again, those are the ones who were really angry. For the price though, I think there are more upscale places to consider. Although being behind Vons and right next to a UCSD shuttle does have its perks.

I wish I knew where I was living next year. September leases ftl. gg!

If you look at La Regencia it doesn't seem old at all - in fact it's very contemporary looking and it's well kept up and is actually already upscale. I've seen plenty of apartment complexes in that area and La Regencia is worth considering. Again, it's one of the better choices in that area.

The caveat - if you and/or your roommates have cars, make sure you consider the parking situation. This goes for most of the complexes around there. Some are really silly and have 'tandem parking' whereby the cars are slotted one in front of the other and would take a fair amount of cooperation to make sure you could get your car out. A 2 bedroom apartment typically has a max of 2 assigned spots (some have only 1) and some complexes don't have much overflow so if you put 4 students in a 2br and they each have a car you could have a parking problem.

'Crazy neighbors' usually boils down to 'crazy UCSD students' maybe being a bit loud, especially if they're drinking. My D didn't have many issues with this but it's the luck of the draw in any apartment in the area since they all have plenty of UCSD students.

Don't go by the 'apartment ratings' websites - go see the place for yourself. Make sure you really consider access to the UCSD shuttle, city bus, and the grocery. Even though my D had a car there she usually rode the shuttle to campus since it was easier and cheaper. She also would walk sometimes.

Although it may be true that renters with negative experiences are more likely to post, this should depress the ratings of all places equally. But La Regencia has lower ratings than almost everywhere, including the Costa Verde apartments.

sorry to open a really old thread, but I was wondering if people have any new feedback to offer re. La Regencia because I was looking into living here and unsure about how it would compare to the other places I’m looking at (Int’l Gardens? among others). any new thoughts? anything would be appreciated :)

It’s decent- not as bad as the reviews.
