I know it’s pretty late to be asking this question, but does anyone know of any liberal arts colleges that would be perfect for someone interested in pursuing media studies, film, and art, or more specifically photography?
preferably in a city, but i can compromise this one.
I’ve applied ED but it’s a pretty reach school. I also have Vassar, Scripps, Pitzer, and Tufts (not LAC but still interested) on my list already… which is a little daunting as these are all pretty hard schools to get into.
also good food would be nice.
if you know of any schools that arent LACs, those are fine too.
thanks in advance
See if you like Sarah Lawrence. It’s close to NYC, has great arts.
Also check out Ithaca. The arts there are quite good. And they have “communication studies,” cinema and photography.
Maybe try Emerson too
For film, Wesleyan is very strong. Also look at Colorado College.
BU, Barnard, GWU, Chapman, Occidental (maybe?)
Emerson was going to be my suggestion - it’s an LAC focused on communication and the arts. It’s really quite perfect for you. You can minor in photography, and major in things like media arts production. And it’s in Boston.
Ithaca is a great match school; another suggestion if you like Vassar is Marist College, a medium-sized LAC in Poughkeepsie. They have a School of Communication and the Arts with majors like media studies and production, digital media, studio art, and games and emerging media, and minors like photography, cinema studies, digital video production and interactive media.
Marymount Manhattan College, a small predominantly-female college on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, has a particular focus on the performing arts and media even though they have traditional liberal arts offerings. They have a major in cinema, television, and emerging media; a major in business with a concentration in media and arts management; a digital media and video production major; and an art major with a photography concentration.
Oglethorpe University is a small LAC in Atlanta. Their studio art major has tracks in photography and film. They also have a communication and rhetoric studies major that may interest you. Atlanta is becoming a Southern hub for media/entertainment and film production.
Some non-LACs that might be good fits for you are Syracuse (you can major in art with a concentration in photography, and they also have other arts and communications programs), University of Rochester (has a film and media studies major and a studio arts major with a solid core of photography classes and workshops), and American University (has majors in film and media arts, communication studies - you can concentrate in several media-related areas, including media and society- and studio art).
You might take a look at Denison, about 30 minutes from Columbus, Ohio. Has a Communication major, Cinema major, and gorgeous studio art facility, with photographys part of the Studio Art major. There seem to be a lot of arts-related events in Columbus that the college provides transportation/tickets for, as well as artists in residence. For a student who is interested in Vassar, Tufts etc., Denison might give good merit. The student body is pretty diverse, in terms of racial/ethnic/socio-economic diversity.
Emerson was my first thought as well.
I’m applying ED to Oberlin and photo there is huge- second best behind Bard for LACs
