Lack of recommended years of foreign language

NYU recommends that applicants take 3-4 years of foreign language. I've only take two years even though my school offers more than that. How negatively will this affect me, and should I even bother applying?

I am applying to either Stern or CAS - Economics (By the way, can anyone give me the pro/cons for the two options? :D)

For reference, my stats are
3.75 UW GPA, 4.2 W GPA (approximately, not sure) taken 8 AP's total, including senior year
SAT: 2320
SAT II: Lit: 800, Math II: 720, World Hist: 720, US Hist: 750
decent amount of extracurricular activities and leadership positions.

Thanks!

This is the exact same position I am in - I want to apply to NYU and major in Economics, but I have only taken two years of Spanish when my school offers three! Anyway, I have researched this a lot and a lot of people say that it does not really play a huge role in determining whether or not you get in. It will affect you by a small amount, but it won’t make or break you. Your stats are amazing as well! From what I researched, Stern is DEFINITELY the school you want to get into, but internal transfers between CAS and Stern ARE possible, but hard. You can always attend CAS and graduate in Economics because you’ll be taking some Stern classes anyways. It’s always best to aim for Stern though! Good luck!

I applied ED1 to stern and only have 2 years. Don’t know how it affects us, but hopefully it wont be a big deal

idontlikewaiting, please update us on whether or not you get accepted! Good luck!

If you don’t test out of their foreign language requirements, you’re may be required to take a language in college. I don’t know if NYU has changed their language requirement since my son graduated CAS '2011/

My son took 4 classes of 4 credits each (which ends up being taking about 20K worth of language). Not sure if they still offer the 6 credit language classes where you probably only need to take 2 to fulfill the requirement.

Take the HS classes and test out of the NYU language requirement unless you want to have to take a language in college.

My son only took Spanish in 9-10 grades and it didn’t affect him getting into NYU. Although I wish I had made him take more language in HS so he could have tested out and not needed to take 4 classes of language in college (unless you really want to master a language)

Not all NYU programs have a foreign language requirement. Tisch does not. However, the overall admissions department looks at your high school foreign language credits as part of your overall packet of college prep work. If you have a very strong transcript it may not matter nearly as much. I think it will be looked at against the backdrop of the strength of your overall transcript and also in light of what college you are applying to, and also in comparison to the student profile from your high school. Your scores and GPA look very strong and you appear to have used those hours well that would have otherwise been spent in a language class. Good luck!

gloriouschicken, idontlikewaiting got accepted to Stern today and she only had two years of foreign language!

D was accepted ED even though she dropped pre-calc in junior year. (She took college algebra in senior year and eeked out a 610 in math on the SAT.) They recommend core subjects every year, but obviously look at applications individually. She had other strong academic areas including an 720v and 35 reading. Plus as a studio art major, talent accounted for 50% of her application.

Good luck.
