LACs that aren't big party schools

It seems like the social life at many LACs centers around drinking etc.

So, are there any LACs that come to mind as not party schools?

Wheaton College in Illinois is the first that comes to mind. The drinking is tame most likely due to its religious affiliation.

Do you mind a school being religiously affiliated?

I think almost every school, unless religiously affiliated, has a drinking scene. But I know there is a non-drinking scene on every campus. My son’s frat at a top LAC had several non drinking brothers. That didn’t stop them from pledged. Maybe it would in some of the other fraternities. But there is an option.

Each of my kids had friends that didn’t or rarely drank. Three different top schools, two LAC’s.

DD’s campus visits found a range. There is a party scene at every campus (the Wheatons and a few others being the rare exceptions). It’s more intense at some. Probably the only way to really tell is to do overnights.

I did an overnight at Haverford, and it didn’t really strike me as a party school. I wouldn’t rule out schools that you otherwise like because they have a reputation of being a party school- most colleges have substance free housing, where you’ll be able to live with people who don’t want their social life to be centered around drinking.

Oberlin is not a typical party school. No frats or sororities and dorms forbit alcohol, pot, and other drugs–of course it all can be found but not pervasive.

Ask about substance free housing at whatever schools you are considering. It tends to attract a group of kids who don’t want a social life that revolves around partying. That doesn’t mean you can’t attend those parties if you live in those dorms - but it means that when you are ready to go home, the party gets left behind.

I’d also say that any schools that was a religious school not long ago (i.e. Furman, which was Christian recently enough to have a bible verse up on the wall in the dining hall). They may have some, but it won’t be quite as pronounced.
