I'm looking for a liberal arts college in the northeast with a strong music department (not conservatory), particularly in music history or musicology but also with good performance opportunities; preferably in a city. Also, I was wondering if anyone has any info/ an opinion on the music departments in these schools: Brown, Yale, Tufts, Wesleyan, GW, American, Goucher, NYU, Columbia, Princeton, Haverford, Swarthmore, & Penn. Thanks for your help!

Consult their websites for specifics....like what degrees are offered, who teaches there, what facilities are on campus, etc etc etc.

The Ivies are generally well regarded for academic study of music, although you will probably find often that the scene there is geared more so towards Graduate and PhD students more than undergrads.

I'm not sure if GW, Tufts, American, and Haverford are really known for their music. Wesleyan and Swarthmore seem to have favorable reputations I think.

In addition to the LACs on your lists, also start researching Sarah Lawrence, Bard, Boston College, and Brandeis. Are you a female? Some of the Seven Sisters colleges might be worthy of consideration as well.
