I will be a freshman at duke this year and want to be an IB. For our puposes we will say that I have no foreign lanuage experience (I went to public school in georgia). Right now I am registered to take Intro to Spanish. Would it be worth my time to take Chinese or is spanish good enough. I am not the most naturally smart kid, so effort and stragegy are what I rely on and I know chinese would be significantly harder.

Spanish would give such a small marginal benefit that you might as well spend the time reading newspapers. You say that chinese would be significantly harder and this is probably true. What's going to be a greater issue is not which can benefit you on your resume but which one will you get an A.

Unless you really want to work in HK, I wouldn't bother with Chinese.
