You will probably have to take a language placement test to determine the appropriate level. the AP 4 or SAT 700 scores are used to test out of the foreign language requirement, not to place into a class, as far as I know.

Popular languages offer placement tests online a few weeks before the beginning of the semester. Less popular languages offer placement tests a week into the semester (shopping week). The placement tests will recommend the appropriate level.

I believe the placement tests are just for guidance (as the previous poster said, they “recommend” a level) and you can choose your own courses in the language you want to study.

If you have placed-out of the language requirement, but wish to take additional language courses, it is strongly recommended that you also take Harvard’s language placement exam so that you are placed into the appropriate level course. (You don’t need a minimum of AP’s to take the placement exam.)
