Language Requirement at Richmond

I am wondering if anyone has input on the COM2 language requirement. I have taken 3 years of Spanish in high school (2 A’s and a B). so I guess I will continue with it. Looking for input if I will be better off in Advance Beginner Spanish, or Intermediate Spanish? I will take the placement test, but I will probably have to study a bit (didn’t take Spanish senior year) to test into Intermediate, or should I stick with Advanced Beginner? Don’t want to be overwhelmed my first semester, but also don’t really want to have to take 2 semesters of Spanish! Thanks

My eldest did her Spanish in duel enrollment through the community college. She also had a year break between those courses and the start of University. She took the placement test and missed “testing out” by 2 points. She went to straight to intermediate and it was fine. My son wants to take a new language so probably won’t bother trying to test out (which is crazy to me lol.)

I would take the placement test. I had a friend who taught herself Spanish and tested out of it altogether. You want to try only to have to take one semester of it. During your first year at Richmond you usually just take four units each semester. Advanced Spanish is only one unit, but you still have the class 5 days a week, including a drill. The scheduling makes it harder to fit in certain classes, depending on what you major in. Intensive Intermediate is also five days a week, but you have class twice a day on two of those days, and it is worth two units. I would aim to take that first semester or second semester if you can because it limits you to only three classes.

Another option if you are interested in taking it during May Term here at UR. They offer Intensive Intermediate Spanish here on campus and also abroad in Spain and Argentina (I believe). That is another popular option for students.

The spanish placement test is online (https://webapps.richmond.edu/GlobalStudio/). You can take it up to three times a year. I would recommend taking it now (as soon as you get your netid-same login as bannerweb), and that would give you an idea of where you are now, and what you would need to study in order to pass out or place into intermediate.

Thanks for the great information. I did not realize I could take it 3 times, so I will take your advice and see where I stand now!

Another language question…looking in BannerWeb at Intermediate Spanish - is there a class then 4 drills? I can’t figure out how it works? And most are full already…do they open more sections for freshman?

@Ellsam14 I’m pretty sure they open more for freshmen, but I’m not entirely sure. You chose one section and I believe that now the drills are attached to them. In the past, I think you selected your lecture class and then also a drill one. I’m on my Bannerweb account now looking. You have class three days a week and drill for four.
