I took 4 years of Spanish in high school, but by no means was it my favorite subject. Can anyone tell me what level I should start at and how difficult the classes/profs. for spanish are?

Do I have to take a placement exam if I want to take a different language from the the one I did in high school? I took Latin but I really want to take French in high school. I would definitely fail a French placement exam since I know no French lol.

OP: I think there are foreign language placement tests at orientation. I’m curious myself at how difficult they are, and how likely they are to actually place you out of it, or at least to a 3rd or 4th semester level. I’ve taken Italian since 7th grade, but I’m not exactly good at it, since its never been really interesting to me.

You don’t have to take the placement exam if you’ve never taken the language.

You will not be “placed out of” a foreign language; even if you test into a semester higher than 4th, you still need to take that semester to finish the requirement.

You can, however, satisfy the requirement by taking the SAT II. I can’t remember the exact score, but it’s likely online somewhere.

The tests are given at Orientation, or you can take them online beforehand.

@BUBailey
this is kinda related to this topic but
i want to take korean at bu (i heard that there was a class)
i scored an 800 on the korean SAT II but i want to further myself in the language and culture. is there an upper level korean class?
btw the level that is tested on the sat II’s is really low.

and also, if we want to go to germany for the science study abroad, do we need to take german? or can we take a different language and just learn german when we get there?

^^ there is no need to take german before. Part of the experience of studying abroad is learning the language there. Of course it does help to know some german prior to leaving.

some study abroad programs require you to learn a bit beforehand…check out [Study Abroad International Programs Boston University](Study Abroad) for the specific program requirements

also yes, there is an upper level korean class.
