Language SAT IIs

One good way to get a concrete idea of how a college thinks about scores is see how they use them in placement. Generally, a score of around 600, which on CC is considered mediocre, will place a student out of three semesters of college language. In other words, a 600 is quite spectacular even if it places you at the 40th percentile in some languages.

Another thing to remember is that the tests are criterion referenced (they measure knowledge but aren’t designed primarily to rank students); most adcoms will read the score in conjunction with the transcript. A 400 after one year of a language is quite different than a 400 after four years.

My daughter is a strong Spanish student (Honors classes every year, AP senior year) and took the SATII in June of junior year got a 710 with very little prep. She did find a review book to be helpful. I think if your daughter is a good student, she will have no problem and could always take again in the fall. Just be careful not to take it in November when it’s the Spanish with Listening. That’s the test that’s harder for non native speakers.
