Hello, is anyone here going to take the French subject test (without listening) or taken it already?

I'm in French IV and I'd like to take it in December (so if I do poorly, I'll have plenty of opportunities to retake because I'm a junior).

How should I study for this? How important is vocabulary, and how important is grammar? Do I need to know anything else (non-grammatical idioms, culture, etc.)?

My French teacher has a lot of SAT II/AP French books/resources that she'll let me borrow (Barron's SAT II French, Barron's AP French, Amsco French 4 Years + AP, practice tests). I think these books mostly deal with grammar. Are they good? Should I buy something myself?

I've also found a website for learning vocab that's effective but time-consuming (it's called smart.fm if you're wondering; it's good if you have the time). How much time should I allocate toward improving my vocab?

I've been looking for French podcasts too. Could anybody recommend me some good (free) ones?

Sorry, that's a lot of questions. If you can tell me anything you know about the French subject test (how difficult is it anyway?), I'd appreciate it. I'm kinda clueless about the test so I bet anything would be helpful. (:

I’ve taken the French Subject Test before. I’d say that not knowing vocabulary can burn you pretty badly (but the harder vocabulary is just plain weird; who the hell knows what douanier means (it means customs officer or something along those lines)?).

Grammar is also a big part of the test (si+tense–>tense, order of direct objects/indirect objects/y/en, etc.). The reading portion isn’t too bad; you can guess at most of the passages and questions even if you don’t get each word.

I used the PR book; the practice tests are rather accurate (low 700’s in PR, 740 on actual). You won’t need idioms or culture. And if you’re in French 4 or AP, you should be exposed to enough vocabulary to get you through the test. I was a 5 on the AP (non-native after 3 years) and a 740 on the SAT II.

Wow congratulations on the 5 and 740, especially after only 3 years! Did you study a lot or did you just /get/ French?

Thank you very much for all the information! I’ll try to find PR at the library (/cheap haha). I should probably work on vocab too. My French teacher for the past 3 years has cared much more about grammar than vocab, so I think my vocab is probably sub-par for a French IV student. ._.

I just kinda got it. I will admit that I had 2 great teachers, though, so that really helped.

And maybe your teacher has a copy of an SAT II (or AP) review guide?
