Laptop case?

So I have a laptop, but do i really need a case? Can't I just carry it in my backpack with my books/etc.? Isn't it cumbersome to have both a laptop case and a backpack? Is there something I'm missing here, people keep telling me to get a laptop case.
Thanks

Get a case, gangsta.

I've had a laptop throughout HS and this past year, and I just put it in my backpack. But then again, I didn't bring it too every class, not nearly, and I was pretty careful with it. Just make sure you don't put it on the ground with all your books sitting on top of it. My basic advice for what you need at school - if you're not really sure if you need it, you probably don't. If you were wrong, it's not the end of the world, you can pick it up at school.

I have a desktop, but from what I've observed, you probably only want one bag for books and computer, and if that's the case then get the backpack, it's classic style and functionality

Simple solution. I have a bookbag that has a laptop compartment. That way I only have one thing to lug around with me on my bike from class to class.

Are you planning to fly home for fall break? Son flies home and needs the good laptop case for flying! He could care less about his suitcase and backpack, but heaven help us if the laptop should get damaged!!! And, he would never leave his laptop at school, esp during breaks. If any of this fits your laptop use, I would suggest a good laptop case just for travel. (And, btw, I don't think son takes laptop to class, even tho he has one of those backpacks with a laptop sleeve).

I bought a case from bestbuy for $24. A small investment to protect a $1000 computer.

Laptop cases are a must. One of the main laptop problems that I see in my dorm is hard drive failure. Why is this? It's because people treat their laptops like book bags which get thrown on the floor at the end of the day. Most students have a bit more respect for their laptops and put the computer in a backpack. The backpack is thrown around, however, and so too is the fragile machine resting inside. To thus insure security, a dedicated laptop case should be used. Not a laptop backpack. Many of these that I have seen and used do not offer adequate protection and padding (especially if you plan on storing a couple hardcover books in the bag along with the computer). Make sure the case has padding protecting the front, back, and sides of the laptop. The hard drive failures I mentioned are more often than not a result of a computer fall or a blow sustained to the bottom casing in an improperly padded case.

Another must are laptop security locks. Do yourself a favor and get one made of Kevlar. They can tie around a desk leg or loft and provide an anchor for your laptop, destop CPU, or monitor. The need for a lock is not to say that Notre Dame is unsafe. Notre Dame is quite safe. But you should protect against pranksters and the possibility of theifs. These, in my opinion, are just as good an investment as cases.

My son never takes the laptop to class--says he can check his ESPN scores on his cell phone :) (Good to know they are focused on learning...) In any case, he pretty much leaves the computer on his desk. He used to fly, although with two up there now, we have sent a car. When he did, he had the thing in his hot little hands so he could watch movies...sort of like he does at home when he wants to avoid us!

Not necessary, how can someone say they are an absolute must? Just get a lock and carry it to class if you need it and treat it gently. Like if you didn't have a laptop case, you would start throwing the computer off the walls.

the swiss laptop backpack is ballinnnnnnnnnn

Of course cases are a must. What happens after someone "carries" a laptop to class and finds himself/herself caught in the middle of a downpour. It just takes a few raindrops for moisture to soak through the bezel and into the back of a LCD screen. And there you go, permanent display damage. Let's be frank. We can all think of reasons why a laptop case is worthless. But it is the situations that we do not think of or cannot predict that ultimately spell trouble for our expensive computers. A case can remedy the problems that we cannot anticipate.

my laptop back is really well padded and has a strap to hold the laptop down against the padding. It is made to stand up on it's own and not fall down when i place it down. also, it does not let rain soak through

Well its really difficult to carry laptop with books…for your convenience you should go for a good laptop case and that you can find here:
