Could you tell what Laptop you guys use?
I'll be doing Engineering (ECE) next year, so keeping that in mind could you guys suggest a laptop. Also, I'm an avid gamer.

nerd!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually i'm leaning towards the Sony VGN-SZ18GP/C model.
Its got loads of memory and hard-disk space. But parents say that its a watse cuz I won;t need many of the features in it like Motion Eye and DVD Video recording...

Any suggestions on a comp that'll let me have a whole lot of memory, sweet perfomance...but minus weird high-tech features.

studentforever, asking which laptop suits me makes me a nerd?

I also seem to like the MacBook Pro, but i'm worried that it won't be compatible with some of the software Cornell uses (atleast thats what CIT says)

Ya I'm hoping that the laptop my dad is getting me is able to play games and run well and such...oy

Arjun, are you buying your laptop in India or after coming here?

I'm going for an ASUS

I don't know if I'll take a W5Ae/W5F or a Z62F.

the W5's are ultraportables at 12.1" widescreens, so I might have to opt for the larger screens on the Z62F (14.1" widescreen)

Still..... I'm really leaning towards the W5 series

that was pretty funny

If you want games, then avoid
1. Macs
2. Laptops that have motherboard-integrated graphic cards. Intel GMA bad, ATI or GeForce good. They are absolutely useless for anything 3D. Be prepared to shell out a little more cash for those that have proper graphic cards, though.

Don't worry if a model you like lacks memory somewhat. RAM is one of the few components in a laptop that you can upgrade yourself.

If you like the MacBook, go for it. Any program you absolutely need to run that doens't run on OSX you can run with Bootcamp.

raghavvp,
I'll mostlly get my laptop in the US...its cheaper there.

What do you all think of the Dell Inspiron series?

why worry about gaming? You'll be in college living with new people and going to class. socializing and schoolwork will take up as much time as you have (and more). As for laptops, Dells aren't that great in terms of mechanical stuff (because they're all custom, they cram parts in there). Take a look at the Toshibas and Sonys and other pre-made ones. Better fit/finish one them.

I have a Toshiba Tecra M4 tablet--I love it, it plays games well, and with a dock it's extremely convenient.
