Laptop...

So i'm wondering, should i bring my laptop to classes? will it be helpful? I'm more than likely going to decide when i start my classes, but does anyone do it/ I'd probably be using it for taking notes or somethhing, since i have horrible handwriting :)

I'd be kind of concerned with getting distracted, especially with free wireless internet.

If you have one why not? I will be brinin my own to class everyday. Not sure if I will use it to type out my notes yet.

-Just turn off your wireless network card. And even if you don't have internet other thins will distract you like the person infront of you.

I wouldn't bring it to class, it will annoy other people.

lets say i dont want to bring a laptop to class to take notes, is there any other reason why i should have one? i'm thinking of getting a desktop computer.

helps when going back and forth from home to school, if you floor/rommate is loud you can bring it to the lilbrary to study with...but then again you can always use a computer at the library so then no.

you can use the laptop in many other locations like a coffee shop, quad, library, another persons dorm room, etc...

um remote desktop, vnc.

the majority of schools are or will soon be banning laptops in class rooms, due to them being a major destraction. They are not the tools once pictured.

^ What schools are you talking about. My school could careless if you can't concentrate, if you are in University you should be able to focus. And its dumb to ban them because some people write very slow but they type very fast. Also all my professors post their notes online so you just have to add more to it.

I think that's a bit of a strech. My school frequently requires us to bring laptops to classes.

i'd say 90 percent of people that use laptops in class use them for things other than classwork. ie, chatting, solitaire playing, etc. i loved having my laptop in college and being able to take it with me to the library and to friends houses and such, but its not something i would have taken with to class every day. i took it once and that was to work on a paper for another class.

Well, it depends on what type of class it is. If it's a project class where everyone is working on programming PICs, then odds are laptops are getting used for work.

b-u-m-p u-p

I would love to take notes in my class with my laptop but I would want to be considerate to others and not make so much noise. Personally, I would be uspet if someone was using a laptop in class and it was fairly noticiable and a smaller class setting (<35 Students).

But if your laptop is next to quiet while running and while you're typing, I say go for it.

I wouldn't take notes on a laptop or otherwise use it in class, but that's just me.

For me, I use a spiral notebook and blue pen. Sure I have horrible handwriting, but here's the thing. The act of taking notes is not just so you can review them later, it's to help you organize your thoughts while listening to the lecture (as you write them on paper) which is not always something you get while typing them in (different thought processes).

You are on the money. Most people who bring them to class don't use them to take notes. I never brought my laptop to class. It was great because whenever I needed to write a paper, I brought it to the library.

For some people it's necessary to bring their laptop to class. I'm a BME major and people have told me many times that I'll be lugging my computer back and forth to class often (if not every day).

My sis, who just finished college said she took hers to class a lot. And if it's a school where they provide the laptop, then professors may expect everyone to bring their laptop for an assignment. My school doesn't give them to us, but I'm not sure if I'll take mine to class. I type slowly compared to many others, so I'm afraid I would miss a lot if I'm trying to type everything. I got along fine with a pen and paper in hs, I could organize any way necessary for getting only important points. But I'm sure I'll be doing a lot of my studying in the library, because I already know there will be too many distractions in the dorm. I just can't imagine not being able to pick up and take my computer home, to the library, or wherever I want to take it, whenever I want to take it.

one consideration is that people in math, sciences, and engineering are going to have to enter in lots of notation and diagrams into their notes. While perhaps if you are a LaTeX whiz, you can enter it all in on the fly, most people are going to have to figure out what to do when they need to write (say) an integral in their notes on computer.
