I saw this on a few other forums soooo which laptop(s) would you recommend?

Errrr.. what are you doing, and what are you going to be using your laptop for? If you're at Tisch and you need it for editing and stuff, I'd say get a Mac.

If you're doing anything other than video editing, get a Thinkpad T series.

get a macbook
I have one and love it and all my friends who don't wish they did

meh
get a thinkpad
i have one and love it and all my friends who don't wish they did

Actually, just get whatever laptop you want - if your major isn't going to require any special programs or anything, all you're going to do is use your laptop for instant messaging, typing up essays, and checking your email... pretty much any new laptop on the market is going to cover that. If you plan on watching movies or playing lots of music, maybe look for something more geared towards that, but you can't go wrong with the major brands.

What is this "NYU discount" and what does it apply to?

if you buy computers throughout the NYU computer store, you get a discount... http://www.bookstores.nyu.edu/computer.store/

Get a macbook pro. So nice. I own one.

ummmmaa i'm in stern.

if you're in stern get a PC. You'll be using all PC programs, and in a few classes there wont be a MAC port. MACs are also ridiculously overpriced and an inferior operating system, they just have a brilliant marketing team and look "cool" so people buy them, but its completely irrational.

Yeah, then pretty much any computer will be fine. I've seen Stern kids with Macs too, but the majority have PCs. If you're going to go the PC route, I'd recommend a Core 2 Duo laptop with Vista so you don't need to upgrade for a long while. I don't think the brand matters too much.

I personally recommend the E1405 Laptop from Dell. It runs on Vista and has an amazing battery life--6 hours and up. The processor selections are more than adequate, I believe they offer up to a Core 2 Duo with 4mb cache. Not to mention that it's pretty cheap for what it packs. The screen size is also convenient, the 14.1" monitor offers enough utility for both entertainment and word processing. 17" tend to be awkwardly big and the 12.1-13.1" are inconvenient at times (I own a 12.1" powerbook). Which brings me to my opinion on Macs. Macs are nice but they really are overrated. I've found much more comfort in using the OS on my desktop (windows) than my powerbook(macosx). Though if you're into some sort of design/art major then you might find more use in a Mac--my sister is a design major and she purchased a Mac. Overall you should be fine nowadays as long as you get the following: Core2Duo Processor, 1 gb of ram, and Vista.

If you're looking for a "nice looking" or "pretty laptop" that runs on Vista, I recommend checking out the Sony VAIOs, they are quite a bit more expensive though.

Is buying through the NYU store cheaper even with the student discount? I just looked through their online catalog, and unless they have another discount after the "add to cart" option, most of their laptops are higher priced than other stores.

"MACs [have] an inferior operating system."

That statement is so contrary to the truth it boggles the mind.

hkstrpd --

i completely agree. tiger is still miles ahead of vista and it came out two years ago.

Depends how you rate OS systems. Plenty of CS majors agree that linux is they way to go :)

MAC's operating system sucks, the only reason it is more secure than Vista and XP is because of the low market share, no one bothers to try to make viruses. If you have half a brain, you don't get viruses anyways, so this point is moot. On any legit performance test a $2500 performances on par with a $1500 laptop. The marketing team over at apple has made a cult of personality almost, in order to compensate for their inferior product

not disagreeing with the cult of personality thing, but besides just saying "mac sucks" why don't you give some reasons why it sucks?

i think the little features of os x that you don't notice until you really begin using it give it the advantage. expose and hot corners for easy window switching, system wide spell check, the maximize button (that stretches a window only as big as it needs to fit all the contents), spotlight (which i guess vista has now), options are laid out where they should be, menu bar saves screen space, built in pdf functionality and the preview app being able to read photoshop and other file types, one program locking up doesn't effect the rest of the system (force quit works effectively), etc.

you can even argue that the subtle animations have a purpose too. when you minimize something to the dock, the genie effect pinpoints exactly where it is (useful when you have many documents open, for example). in vista, the eye candy includes folders appearing out of nowhere. serves no purpose besides slowing down folder open times.

not trying to keep an e-argument going because on something like this you can't change somebody's opinion -- just putting it out there...
