Hey there... I'm posting this for a family friend, a current high school junior who wants some advice on schools to look at.

She's hoping to go south (she lives in CT) for college... Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington DC are acceptable, but she's really thinking Virginia on down to Florida and out west to Texas. She's thinking big in terms of the student body. Over 15,000 (undergrads & grads combined) is ideal, but she'll also consider schools as small as 7,000. A big football scene would be a great plus and, at the very least, she's looking for a school with lots of school spirit (she's a former cheerleader). That being said, her mother is wary of "party schools" and the junior herself wants a place that will combine school spirit and academics. She's interested in International Business, but the school doesn't have to have that specific major... she'd be willing to major in something like Business or International Studies as well.

In terms of her stats... she's a pretty good student (As and Bs), but her SATs weren't too strong. I don't know what her scores specifically were, but I believe they were in the 550-640 range. She's planning on retaking them, however, and is also going to be taking the ACT. Thanks so much for the input!

University of South Carolina would be a good choice, as their international business program has been consistently rated as #1 in the country for years now. Lots of school spirit there, and a big-time football program.

Virginia sounds perfect, but that might be tough to get into.

Definitely look into Georgia and Clemson. I would highly recomend Clemson. South Carolina is a good option, too. they have a very good business program and their international business department is top in the country, although very hard to get into.

Also, I know it’s not perfect location wise, but Indiana University also sounds like a great fit, and it’s undergrad business program is top ten in the nation so I would recommend looking at that.

Georgetown also fits all the criteria, but it would probably be a high match. Try Villanova, too, cause although it is in Philadelphia, it has a good business school.

UGA is a stretch with those SATs, if she broke 1200 she might have a shot

I’d recommend USC.

In roughly decreasing quality for business,

UNC Chapel Hill
UT Austin
UVA
Maryland-College Park
Florida
Georgia
Georgia Tech
USC-Columbia
Virginia Tech
Auburn
Florida State
Georgia State
Tulane
Alabama
Baylor
Tennessee
Clemson
NC State
U Miami

Several of these are big reaches with her current SAT scores.

I definitely recommend Clemson (the school I’m going to next year so this is biased). There is a major called “International Language and Trade” so she could combine courses in that major with other courses in the Business school to fit her needs. The business school was ranked 22nd among public schools in the country by BusinessWeek magazine. The school has 12,000-13,000 undergraduates so probably over 15,000 including graduate students, small enough to get personal attention but large enough to offer the resources students need. I’m sure people would agree with me that Clemson is one of the top football schools in the country and the school spirit people have on campus is special. Everyone wear’s orange and purple and loves the school. However, the school is not just parties, there are outdoor activities, sports events, and over 250 clubs on campus. Students are very good at balancing both academics and extracurricular activities. If you have any questions about the school, feel free to send me a message!
