I am having a bit of a dilemma deciding what I should do for the upcoming school year. I applied for transfer to USC and some other schools, but it did not work out as my GPA fell because of family/housing issues. I did not apply for intercampus transfer because of numerous unanticipated circumstances that literally made it impossible.Since this did not work out, I have very few options because I will become a senior in Winter 08. I changed my mind about my major this summer from Comm to Bus. Econ so I now have to fulfill the prerequisites for Bus. Econ. My only dilemma is that I do not want to stay at Santa Barbara. I would prefer to transfer to another UC with a better Business/Economics department. If I stay at UCSB, I can only apply to Haas (already checked with their advisor regarding unit maximum) and acceptance would be a miracle with my GPA. I would not be able to apply to UCLA Bus. Econ because they only accept junior-level transfers. One of their advisor's said that I would have to stop attending in order to apply and this would make me ineligible for Haas because I have none of the prereq’s done. By continuing at SB, I would be fulfilling UCSB’s Econ prereq’s, though. I am also worried about staying at SB because I need to show a drastic improvement in grades and the profs at UCSB this quarter for the prereq’s have terrible ratings and are difficult graders. I think it could seriously jeopardize and hurt my GPA more. One other option for UCLA if I stay at UCSB might be by exception. I think I can bring my GPA up to 3.3 by year’s end (possibly at UC and definitely at CC) and complete prereq’s by spring. The only other option I was thinking is for me to attend a CC to take the prereq’s. ( I attended DeAnza for a Comm. course in Spring with a 4.0. UCSB would not accept it as they would not allow concurrent enrollment. Do I have to mention it on apps? This class would give me 137 units if added.) Maybe then I could apply as a CC transfer to both Berkeley and UCLA to make my chances better so I can leave SB and not have to worry about unit maximums for LA? Any good advice would be appreciated.

Completed prereq’s:

Haas prereq’s to fulfill:

Comp Sci.
Foreign Lang.

It would be very tough to go back to CCC because those grades will still follow you and I believe that most of your units have to be from a CCC if you want to be considered a CCC transfer. (I could be wrong someone else on the boards probably know) However UC to UC with your stats also will be very difficult to get into UCLA or Berkeley. And Haas in your situation will be damn near impossible. The best thing probably for you to do to get out of UCSB is apply to UCI. They are suppose to have a decent Bus/Econ program.

Well, you have a complicated question, and I have absolutely no idea how you figure out something like that. However, in regards to units:

I believe the unit cap is 135, but there is no cap for CCC credits. If you’re still under that cap, I /think/ you could go to a CCC and finish all prereqs, etc, without a problem. Once you transfer, they would cut you down to 105.

I would say there are two things you should do to check this out:

 1. Contact the schools you want to transfer to (UCLA and Cal) and ask about unit caps. Make sure to distinguish between UC and CCC units, as this is a very important distinction.
 2. Ask UCSB if you can do say, a year off, or whatever it would take to do the courses at community college, and if they would take you back afterwards.

If you’re still under the unit cap (even if just barely), it seems like it’d be safe to leave SB, go to De Anza, apply to transfer. If you don’t get in to Berks or LA, go back to SB. Applying from De Anza lets you escape caps, but you won’t lose the security of a UCSB diploma, and at the worst, you’d lose a year, and maybe not get transfer credit at SB for all the courses you took.

I hope that made sense…I know it’s complicated, but when I left Davis, I was told by a counselor at my CCC (who was wrong about plenty of things, so don’t bank on this) that I could go back to Davis. I didn’t want to, so I didn’t look into it.

Good luck!

I just read on the UC website to get CCC priority you must have completed 30 semester units from a California community college. But make sure you do not go over 80 semester units because most UC’s will consider that an excessive units and will consider you a senior transfer student which will bring you down to a 1% acceptance chance. So if you can complete 30 units at a CC and can stay under 80 units you can go back to a CC if you want and hopefully get your overall GPA to around a 3.5. (exception: if all your units are from a two year university there is no unit limitation.)
