Is it possible for a senior athlete who suddenly appears on a coach's radar to submit an application to a school long after the admission deadline--like now. Is this permissible and has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

I would think the coach might be your best source of information on this question.

Very hard for any of us online strangers to answer when we don’t even know which college you’re talking about. I would guess that Wichita State would be a lot more likely to accept a late application from an athlete than Yale would.

I think for the most part this may not be possible.

D1 has so many rules-prolly not.
But for a private D3 college and a cash-paying student with good credentials in ANY field(not just sports)-if above the average qualifications of the school-it has been known to happen.

Totally depends on the college, but I would think it would be possible at a good number of schools if the coach has input with admin.

Yes, it is possible as we know someone who had this exact experience. The athlete was contacted by the coach (private D1 school) in April of his senior year and offered a scholarship. Other recruits had fallen through and the coach was looking for more athletes and contacted him (the coach found this athlete on berecruited.com). This was not a school that he had applied to, but by a stroke of luck he was offered this opportunity and it’s worked out extremely well for him.

It happens in basketball all the time D1, D2, D3, NAIA and NAJCC

as others have said, it depends on the school. i know of one elite, d1 school that allows it all the way through 4th of July - track n field
