Late decision: any summer study abroad/volunteer programs

So DD was thinking that she had a government summer internship here at home, but with the government hiring freeze, new summer intern hires are in jeopardy. She is studying Japanese in college and for obvious reasons, she will not be going there.

I have been searching for something that might be in an English or German speaking country where she could volunteer or study for a month or so. Anyone know of any reliable (and safe) programs someone might be able to still do at this late date?

Thanks for the suggestions.

MD Mom, I PM’d you.

My daughter took a gap year and spent 6 months in Africa through Projects Abroad. Some of the countries are English-speaking (Ghana, South Africa, etc). You can go for as little as a month and while they prefer 3 months advance application, they can do with less. The cost is really front-loaded so the first month is unfortunately the most expensive.
Also try “Volunteers for Peace” - no personal experience with them, may have heard of them through CC (can’t remember now) but they have a lot of short-term projects all over the world, including US and Europe, and I think they charge very little.

AIESEC (an international student organization that facilitates internships in many countries) still has a number of opportunities starting this summer. Minimum term would be about six weeks.
http://www.aiesec.org/cms/aiesec/AI/students/index.html

Quite a few colleges have AIESEC chapters; if hers does that would be the easiest conduit.

The fees are a few hundred dollars and you need to pay for the transportation costs and sometimes living expenses, though sometimes lodging is provided. Some pay, and those are much tougher to come by – and she’s probably too late for them, but there are many in the area of development or education that are volunteer opportunities.

[AFS Intercultural Programs](http://www.afs.org) and [Youth For Understanding](http://www.yfu.org) may still have something available for the summer. Check the websites. Both are long-standing reputable exchange organizations and you should be able to expect good support services if they would ever be needed.

Thank you all.
