Both my early decision and early action school requested them, and there is no due date on their websites, so I’m hoping that it doesn’t affect my chances of admission or mark my application as incomplete.
If I submit the docs this week, would it harm my application for admission, or would it just delay or invalidate my request for financial aid? Does it harm my application that I still haven’t done them? Is it incomplete as such?
If it is need blind the offices don’t communicate that much and are very flexible. IDOC itself is having huge delays as well so all the schools are currently notified that the documents are getting processed late even if they are submitted on time. You should be fine as long as you submit ASAP. It takes around 5-6 business days for the docs even to be sent to your school.
If you don’t complete them you can still be accepted to the school you will just have no financial aid if you choose to attend.
Most don’t allow direct email, however, because they are government documents that college board has to process and verify. You could ask but you should submit through idoc to be safer.
The College Board only has to “process and verify” these “government documents” if a school wants them to. There is no government requirement that a school has to receive these documents through IDOC, and in fact many schools that request these documents from sudents do not use IDOC, but instead ask that the documents be sent directly to the school.
It might not be too bad for the EA school, but ED means you have to accept or reject the offer fairly quickly. If you don’t get the FA package on time you would have to take a huge gamble and pray you’ll get good FA after you accept or simply deny because you don’t want to take the risk.
submit the documents NOW…if you already haven’t done so.
Then call the ED school in particular…the financial aid office…and find out the implications of a late submission. They will, tell you if there is an issue…or not.
And don’t miss anymore deadlines. Schools have deadlines for a reason.
Thanks for posting this. We just found out - today - that my son was supposed to send IDOCS for early action to his first choice school. He missed that deadline and we uploaded them today. Regular decision deadline is tomorrow (1/1). The emails from College Board went to his junk mail that he found while deleting emails in his junk folder. He is very upset about it all. He won’t qualify for financial aid (our income is over $500,000) but the college required the FAFSA and CCS (not sure the acronyms are right) plus the IDOCs apparently. He email the college admissions counselor for our territory to explain, and I hope that is enough. He has other good college options, but this was his first choice. Great life lesson was learned. Read all email and scour all folders when applying for college.
I find it hard to beleive that a school requires the submission of Profile, and detailed and sensitive personal financial documents through IDOC, when an applicant is not applying for need-based financial aid. What school is this?
This was UofMiami. Their information is ambiguous, but we were told we had to complete financial aid hoops even though my son won’t qualify. Apparently some schools want to make sure that all financial aid is dispersed before handing out merit money in order to spread around as much money as possible. USC also comes to mind in this but doesn’t require iDOCs. The north east schools do this too I’m told but my S didn’t apply anywhere cold. There are kids on the UofMiami early acceptance thread upset that they probably won’t get accepted since their IDOCS were not submitted on time. I don’t understand why the FAFSA and CSS aren’t enough.
The only requirement that I see on the school’s website is that the FA forms must be submitted and the required documents sent via IDOC if the applicant is seeking need-based aid. No requirement for every applicant, regardless of financial need, to jump through the hoops. It is not ambiguous on the website. If you were told this by a university employee on the phone or through email, my belief is that they were mistaken.
Edited to add: I’m especially ducious of this “everyone regardless of need must submit Profile” thing because unlike FAFSA, submitting Profile costs money. The College Board has enough of a racket going as it is; they don’t need (or deserve) the help of colleges and universities in getting more money from the wallets of parents and students for something that serves no purpose.
We were told this when visiting. The ambiguous part is the very severe sentence on the website that combines applying for admittance and financial aid and states that failure to meet the deadlines will most likely result in rejection. Also there are posts on CC by parents of admitted students that say UofM wanted FAFSAs and such from them even though they didn’t qualify. We are new at this and are just trying to do what we are told to do. UofM is my son’s first choice so we are doing whatever they say to do.
I am sure someone will, correct me if I am wrong…but I believe Unjversitynif Michigan is NEED BLIND for admissions. This means your financial need is NOT considered when your application for admission is reviewed.
The admissions department deals with admissions and your admission application.
The financial aid department deals with financial aid forms.
They aren’t in the same place.
With the large number of applicants it Michigan, I seriously doubt that the admissions folks have the time…or inclination to contact financial aid…at all.
Your financial aid status…and applications will have NO impact on your son’s chances for admission…if I’m correct.
I can understand asking an applicant to submit FAFSA, which us free, in order to make sure that the applicant is not foregoing any federal aid to which s/he is entitled or may be eligible. But requiring Profile and financial docs submitted via IDOC for all students is going way too far.
